Choosing a marine battery

I have a 1978 55 hp evinrude on an old banshee. I run a lowrance elite 4x and i suppose there are two little lights. My minn Kota is rigged up to a separate battery (old car battery for now).
The deep cycle it came with is old and cruddy. What should I be looking for on a new one amp wise, etc? I might someday try and rig up the minn Kota to the single battery I purchase.

Should I throw it in the 12v2a charger for a day after purchase?

check it with a multi meter,you will need a min of 12.6
personally I would cherge it for 4 hrs on a low setting

I bought an el cheapo battery meter... I would recommend you do the same. If you bought it off the shelf it likely needs some charge.

I would look for a Series 29 deep cycle. Your not really looking for CC (cold cranking) capacity that is for a starting battery. You want one with a large Reserve capacity, usually listed in minutes. I would try and stay with at least 180 minute reserve for a trolling motor.

Yep,,,,, the higher the reserve capacity , the better for longevity on the water.

These are big batteries physically but they do last longer. I found a group 31 with 210 min RP. At any rate I keep two batteries for my trolling motor (one as a back up spare for those week long fishing trips away from electrical power). I run a smaller group 24 600 CC amp battery for starting the engine. This battery also runs the sonar.

Buy a marine grade battery tender/charger.Even if there isn't a power site I'm sure you will have a generator.
