You can try on-line sites like www.theammosource.com (aka SFRC) and tradeexcanada.com - both have 8mm Mauser ammunition listed.

Be careful
8x56 mannlicher is not 8mm Mauser (8x57)

Thanks for the concern and PM... I know that there is a difference ... I would have easily found the 8x57 in this one horse town ...

Cheers ! :)

Is this the 8x56mm M-S or 8x56mmR?

The rifle is a 1908 Mannlicher Schoenauer ... the calibre is 8x56 mm. That is how it is listed ...:)

I doubt if it is the 'R' version ...

You'll probably need the proper clips to go with it.

The Greek Mannlicher uses clips the 1908 uses loose Ammo with an internal magazine with a rotary lifter

There is an 8 x 56 R version, kinda sorta. I have a set of RCBS 8 x 54 Danish Krag Dies, and not showing that much wear surprisingly. I believe they are quite close to the 8 x 56 we are discussing. D.H.

Of the gun and someone will ID it for you. Brass for 8x56R is available by PRIVI /Serbia and Hornady .8x56R can also be made from the Soviet 7.62x54R.8x56 MS can be made from 8x57 brass. The Steyr 95 straight pull bolt was used by Austria/Hungary and requires en-blockclips.The 8x56 MS has a spool magazine and most likely the classic butter knife bolt handle.Nazi marked /Austrian military ball shows up at gunshows periodically 8x56R.Let's see what you got first.....Harold

Thank you. I shall check it out ... would, if I had my druthers, prefer a box of loaded ammunition. Might have to go the reloading route, however ..:thinking-006:

I now have the dies and reformed brass (35 Whelen) ... got it primed this morning and will decide on the powder for the bullets that I also have .. 170 grain (323) Barnes and a partial box of 220 grain Hornadys

Trade Ex does not carry 8 MM Mannlicher loaded ammo ,,, thanks ...

I bought all of mine from various gun shows and it came on the original clips in the boxes.

A few years ago, to save the original ammo, I bought the dies, brass, and bullets from TradeEx Canada and started loading for my long rifle.

I reloaded ten brass with 43grains of 4064. Fired one shot at 25 yard target this morning . Dead on. Primer was sticking out of primer pocket??? :mad0100:
I do not think this was because of high pressure as my information was 46 grains being maximum .. ?? The shell was easy to extract ...

Hmmm... :confused::confused:

180 grain Barnes ... :)

44 grains and 44.5 grains ... primer was no longer protruding .. case was separating ... :rolleye2: Now I am going to get a cast of chamber ... maybe the calibre is not what it is supposed to be ??? Also going to phone the far away dude that gave me the little rifle and do a bit of asking ???

The fired cases.........that should narrow it down unless it has excessive headspace to start with? Harold

I had the chamber cast done and it was 8x56 as I had assumed .. since my last posting I had done some shooting down at the range and now am getting case separations ... The gunsmith has my rifle and all of my reloading accessories and will try to figure out the problem ... I am about ready to turn that rifle into a lamp .. or to save myself further aggravation I just might throw it into the Old Man River and let it sleep with the fishes ... :thinking-006:

8X56 MS cannot be made from 8X57! Different body diameter!

I'm a little late to the party here, but I am just down the road from you Scruffy out by Fernie B.C.
If you need some factory Western Brass(1930's) for the 8X56 ms ? or still complete live rounds for that matter ?, I can probably arrange that.

Fine little Rifles the 1908 MS, and they shoot very well.
The 8X56 hits a little harder than the 6.5X54 model 1903 MS(I have a few of those as well), nonetheless, beautiful and functional little gems !
and soooo smoooth to cycle...... hard to believe these 100 year old pieces can make today's even most expensive stuff compare like clunky clank sticks.

Hello, I am not local, but I was looking online for 8x56MS ammo and found this thread. I recently purchased a MS 1908 and would be interested in proper 8x56 MS headstamped brass and/or live ammunition, if within my budget. thanks...jon

So my bet has always been head space. What did the issue turn out to be and was the smith able to fix it?

I sent you a pm but don't know if you received it ?

The Model 1908 Mannlicher Schoenauers used their own proprietary Cartridges and can NOT be made from the 8X56 "R" Brass, nor the 8X57 Springfield, Mauser, etc., etc. as completely different.
As mentioned, I believe the 35 Whelen may present the closest Brass candidate for reforming ?
or,
I may be able to help you out with some once fired original head stamped 8x56 ms Brass from Western, CIL or Dominion, all of whom quit servicing this Caliber in North America back in the 1930's as is my understanding.

I do have many vintage 1930's Boxes of live ammo from all 3 manufacturers in pristine condition as well, but as you said, I don't believe it is either within your Budget, nor would I wish to be selling it to you for the apparent Market Value these days.

Scruffy is a true character I glad I know him ! The gun had the wrong bolt in it and therefore had excessive headspace. He has 35 Whelen brass that was formed by an outfit out of the USA . It was correctly formed . To try and get him going, with out setting barrel back, was to fire form some brass. Seated bullets to contact lands with Trailboss powder , fired once then did the same fireform again with a mild load of 4198? . They were holding together fine in the fireforming .That's as much as I know . Scruffy hopefully got to harvest a deer with it
