That makes me very sad, it was bad last year too! :(

Here is another interesting fact, all the wild Chinook and Cohos that are commercially caught are shipped directly to China. Apparently Canadians don't deserve them :thinking-006:

You do know that a market is built on millions of people not just you?

If your paying 7G a trip, your paying to much.

How do you know that I am paying too much? A foolish assumption on your part Jamie.

As per sending all of our Chinook to China, as far as I am concerned a percentage of all wild fish caught in Canadian waters should be designated for Canadians.

Us Canadians are used to paying to much for beef and pork, why should fish be any different?

Not foolish at all..
You are talking about FOOD, your comparing commercial caught fish with the cost of a trip.

The 7 G is for the trip.. The fish is the bonus.

As to wild Coho and Chinook. I can find it here.. Why can't you?

Boyds here in Calgary will have it.. Not sure if you would find such a expensive product at Walmart......................

I would imagine every fish shop in Calgary will have it as well.. Thing is.. It's probably around $20/KG
I don't need to troll you, you do a great job of that yourself.

Whatever, for a guy that does not know how much time I spend on the west coast fishing, or where I stay or who I hire or what type of fishing I do, you sure do know a lot about how much I spend.

Unlike you I can afford to fish, without going to the store and trust me it's way more fun and fresher. The store bought Chinook you eat has been out of the ocean for at least 14 days. Bon Appetite! lol

I don't buy fish but I see them sell "fresh" Chinook at Costco every once in a while, could come from AK tho too, along with th king crab legs they sell there as well. There'll be some fish monger standing there and the fish I see all in this fancy glass box, then you don't see him for months. Most likely th "fresh" in Alberta means freshly thawed.

Skeena... my speculation is that they are speculating too much on the run size and they don't know. So they will start with the full closure, the poor "white guys" (like me, even tho I've never got a sunburn in my life) miss the best part of the Chinook season and as th numbers of sockeye show up, the likelihood of a sport season on the sockeye increases, probably one fish to start.

Why is it that our Americans don't ever have to put up with salmon closures so the natives can kill everything? I think the sport and commercial people need to take the government to court and defeat this native commercial harvest that is under the guise of personal, ceremonial, and or religious purpose harvest and get it to a true personal, LIMITED/REGULATED native harvest whereby they allow the natives a reasonable, personal, regulated harvest, and closely monitored/policed/enforced.

Ideally I would like to see equality for all Canadians, but that is not possible in this great land, so at least get this wildlife consumption abuse problem dealt with ASAP. There's only one way to do it, and it would take $$$$ and the courts to do it. Surely our law isn't that lame that it couldn't be done?

Surely we could raise millions of $$$$ to see this through and get it done?

I see the same thing happening with the west coast wild salmon fishery that happened to the wild Atlantic Salmon fishery, which was decimated years ago by commercial fishing.

We Canadians can come home with a couple of Chinook while the commercial fishermen ship tones overseas to feed the Asian market. The chart below indicates the harvest drop from 1990 to 2015. Pathetic!

NO!!! STOP making sense! :)

I wouldn't be so quick to praise the US. This is a global problem far beyond a Canada only problem:

http://juneauempire.com/local/2017-03-06/spring-king-fishing-canceled-emergency-order

I know this is Chinook and not Sockeye but AK just happens to have the location for amazing runs that beat many of all of the runs here of Sockeye. I do agree, they really manage their counts. And, it still doesn't change the fact that the playing field in Canada should be leveled across all "takers". That is a place to start but the issue is not limited to Canada for sure.

And just in case someone is thinking "yeah, well that is AK under Sarah P..."
Our Southern US neighbors appear to fare no better this year:
