I was out fishing the other day and took some footage as I was fishing. I was going for sturgeon with Nightcrawlers, which obviously means I was catching lots of suckers too. At about 2:37 in this video it is seen that a sucker with a huge growth on it was caught. What is it?

Common Lymphocystis - basically a cyst that grows on white sucker commonly. You should bleach your net and anything else that cam into contact with that fish as the virus can spread.

Thanks so much. I have had lots of growths like this on suckers and walleye, but I have never seen one so big. The total mass of this growth must have been at least as big as a golf ball. with it being right on the tail like that, I am amazed that it was still able to swim well.

White suckers are processed for human consumption and go by the name of mullet. Better check your labels when you buy fish sticks.

I Hope you realize these are the fish that clean the water and are a species that provide food for the predator fish species.

I am so sick of the stupid old fishermen's tale that suckers are bad.....they are very beneficial to the local ponds and rivers. You just have the few fishermen that are stupid enough to keep the long tradition of "killing every sucker they catch" living on.

Maybe some people think that by killing them they are making more space or leaving more food for other fish. Actually, you are killing a sucker that will have babies and those babies turn into great food for other fish. Every year I gather lots of 3-9 inch suckers to use as bait for all styles of fishing and they always bring me great success, which proves they are definitely an important meal to other fish,

Dip netting suckers out Lk Winnipeg creeks is a timeless ritual .
sucker meat in a sealer jar with garlic, onions , cloves , vinegar
tomato juice ..... Tastes better than canned pink salmon
