On August 12th of this year the Evergreen Shooting Club located near Drayton Valley will be putting on the for the 25th year the Fred Wilkening Memorial Rifle Rodeo.

This is a shooting event designed by hunters for hunters.

There are 8 life like targets which depict game animals like grouse, rabbits, gophers, head on deer, bear, elk, coyotes, and a real running deer.

The rules are pretty simple:

-The rifle must be of a chambering which is classed as a legal big game cartridge in the Alberta Reg's.
-The style of rifle or types of optics or sights doesn't matter.(iron sights shoot at a slightly shorter distance)
-You won't need your bipods or other sorts of rests or shooting supports.
-You start and finish with the same rifle.
-Kids, youths, ladies and seniors are all welcome.(kids get a bit of a break on shooting positions and time limits)
-Expect shots from as close as 25yds, to as far as 350ish yards.
-Expect to shoot from the 4 basic field positions.(off hand, kneeling, sitting, and prone)

You'll need at least 30 rounds of ammunition to complete the event.

There is un serviced camping areas right outside the range so bringing the RV is recommended.

There are belt buckles and cash for shooting well, plus lots of door prizes available for those willing to hang around and help clean up.

We close Saturday off with a steak supper, and fellowship and revelling around a camp fire.

There will be a $40 entry fee plus a sur charge of $5 to cover insurance for non club members.

I will start taking booking for spots starting on July 24th.

First 50 shooters get guaranteed spots.

If you aren't signed in at the shoot by 7:30 AM Saturday you'll likely loose your spot.

I just talked to the wife. She has already registered for a power lifting competition that weekend so we won't be there. That was the one shoot she said she enjoyed a lot and we were all really excited about coming up.

Believe me, if things change, we'll be there.

Thanks to Dick and crew for all the work organizing this and making it such a great environment to be in.

I would love to participate as I have many years before. My body joints are failing me. I am scheduled for a cortisone injection in my shoulder. If it all works all well, count me in. If for some reason that I cannot shoot, I'd be happy to be a spectator or a range officer.

I should be there no problem. I'd even bring my first time shooter 17 yr old daughter if I could find a lefty 243 or similar to borrow as she is showing interest.

fantastic looking forward to it..as always, now to book off that time.
after wrecking the ranges targets last year by punching holes in the 404 steel targets am i even invited this year?

for those who have never shot here, you have to try this at least once. first time shooters are treated with much respect and given liberties .
scores are not important unless your beating dick, then score is everything.

It's a rifle rodeo.:snapoutofit:

You shoot targets that look and act like game animals.:sign0161:

I thought the course of fire was more or less laid out in my first post.

What did I miss?

You bet it's a great event. I've attended many years now, and if my cortizone injection in my left shoulder allows me, I'll be there to shoot. Very well organized, great food, great friendships are made at this event. I'd highly recommend it for newcomers, male, female or the youngsters. An all around great meeting of like minded folks. Besides, you can learn a lot of good "one liners" from the man himself. :sHa_shakeshout:

Here we go folks, things are filling up fast with but a handful of entries left available.

It looks as though Mother Nature is going to bless us once again, with clear skies and sunshine.

We've got piles of donated door prizes, and the steak supper is fully sponsored.

Don't miss out........

If you have any reservations about this event, throw them out the window. I wish we could've made it again this year. This is the one event of the year that my wife actually wants to attend.
Dick and the rest of the organizers are awesome and the steak dinner is phenomenal. If you go, you won't be disappointed.

Wishing everyone a great time and good luck. Unfortunately, I am committed to helping my neighbor mowing, raking and bailing. :)

Although I said "unfortunately", I don't really mean that as I love farming without the financial responsibility. And the pay back that I get for my time is second to none. :)

But you gotta remember if it wasn't for folks like yourself, who show up, participate, and spread the word, these sorts of events wouldn't go on for a quarter century.

a great time as usual, hard to beat the great weather and a weekend surrounded by like-minded folks.

thanks to dick and his family for the ongoing commitment to this event.

thanks as well to paul from secure energy, for bringing, manning, and donating awesome steaks for the supper again, as well as gary gilson for the help cooking and donating the fresh taber corn.

lots of door prizes again this year, dick will have to put that list together, but sure is nice every participant gets something for turning out.

congrats to travis for shooting an excellent match, (even if he did use all the cripple positions instead of taking us on offhand:fighting0074:), as well as dick for second place finish and devon for third, both shooting offhand with me.

next is leffingwell in lethbridge this week end, and then ponoka 50th rifle rodeo long weekend in september. shaping up to be a great month!

thardy was on fire out there
there is ton of work to keep this rocking and rolling. the guys who put in the time deserve the credit for this. bar none. i wished i could help a little more but practical distance prevents that from being feasible.
my door prize was a smoking nice golf shirt from ADVANTAGE MFG LTD.
personally i had a good score i think 53 or something and managed not to punch holes through any evergreen steel plates.
great to hook up with the usual AO suspects and hear about the hunting season successes.
it was a long day for Suzi and me so we cut out early.
BTW she says hi and she enjoyed meeting you all!!
the Secure team deserves huge cred for the lunch and steaks.

A big thanks to all involved in making this shoot possible. Thanks to those mentioned that donated lunch, steak dinner with fixings and dessert, and prizes as well. Shoot ran smoothly and quickly as it should. My son and I have attended the shoot last 6yrs or so, and this year I was able to bring 2 first time shooters. My 17 yr old daughter and my 12 yr old nephew. Both were so thrilled with the event they have signed up for next year! Great to see many familiar faces and sure missed the ones that couldn't make it. Congrats again to the winners. All top shelf gentlemen.

I figure if I hang out with you guys long enough, I may learn to shoot one day!

Kids were tired and ready for baths by the time we got home, but they love running around making new friends out of everyone they talk to.

Thanks again, a good crew of people at this shoot
