Year 12 back in the bush of northern Ontario. I used to guide at this gig full time for the first 4 years, but now only for a couple weeks every summer. Guide during the days and fish in the evenings and my days off at a trophy fishing lodge for free. This year I was out with guests for the first 12 days then I got the last 3 days off to fish for myself. The weather was awesome for the first week but had to come back to Southern Alberta just to see the sun again with wind, rain and cold for the last 8 days. This year the fish gods didn't treat me as well as they have in previous years. Got lots of good fish with guests but when it was time to be out on my own, a lot of my spots that are good this time of year just weren't hitting.

A few good fish from the first couple days A couple 42" pike. A nice 18" smallie and a 28" eye, which was my biggest for the 2 weeks.

This area used to be fully treed, unfortunately pine beatle has come through and wiped out about 95% of the pines on the lodge property. MaKes for great morning views thought and a whole lot of fire wood for the next few years!

Wow...what great pictures and great fish.

Thanks for posting them and it looks like you had a good time.

There is NOTHING like a Canadian Shield lake for fishing.

My last couple days in camp I was on my own. After looking at the weather I was trying to decide what I wanted to do for the morning. In those crappy conditions I did what every good fisherman does, picked the windiest, roughest shoreline and trolled big baits up and down it and was fully rewarded!! In total I got 2-41", 38, 37 and a dozen in the 30-36" range

Then it was time for bass fishing.

Smallie fishing is about the most fun you can have with your pants on, especially this time of year. Pull up about 20' from shore and make short casts around rocks and cover, they normally hit in the first 5' or so and like to jump!
