Here's a pic, for general interest, of a white moose shot in WMU 326 about 20 years ago. Thats the much younger me with the moose that my buddy had shot. If you know that area, it was near Line Heater #4 (LH4) just off the Swan Lake road, west of Caroline. A once in a lifetime event.

The moose was not albino, as you can see by its hooves (black) and its eyes (not pink). CO called it a mutation.

My buddy had the head mounted and years later this newspaper article appeared.(scroll right). The head is now in a museum in Ottawa. http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q129/myrtlebrent/File0001.jpghttp://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q129/myrtlebrent/File0002.jpg

Way to go! I have seen pure white Elk in the bush. I know this sounds silly but I view the white animals as the caretakers of the forest. Not to take anything away from your Moose just the way I view things. Thanks for sharing the picture.

A white moose, a king of the wild animal ghosts of Alberta. If I had the chance to bag one of those ghost's I would. When my family and I saw that pure white red eye wolf ghost on highway 16, 1/2 way between Edsion and Hinton my wife said that would make a fine rug, except will you ever see one while your out hunting? Well that was 10 years ago or so and I still haven't seen one while hunting.

Thats an oddball for sure , i have seen one exactly like it this moose season .
It was a youngen with mom , but exactly like that ,greyish with the spots and no pinkeye or signs of being an albino.
Talked to a couple guys at my camp base that seen the same creature.. maybe next season i will see it again.

Looks like a piebald. There have been a few deer shot on camp Wainwright that have been piebald as well. I have a piebald porcupine, I will post some pics later.

Here's a couple pictures I took of a white mule deer buck that was hanging around an area I hunt a couple years ago. The pictures are not that great, light was poor and my camera wasn't the best, but this deer was pure white, looked like a ghost coming through the bush. It wasn't albino, had black hair on it's tail and ears.

When it comes to mutations, I suppose its only natural that it found its way to Ottawa.

There is a picture that has been captured of two albino moose together in Ontario.
if you seen one would you take the shot?

I remember this thread. I was grandzillaa then then later jeepzilla. . I still never saw a white albino wolf again. The only white animal I saw out hunting a few year back was a all white weasel. That thing followed me ever where I went for a bit.

Someday I hope I will get a picture of a ghost moose, or deer on a trail camera.

i posted on here when I saw an albino moose yearling east of Daysland a few years ago. I'm sure it was a moose by the way it moved when it ran.
I wonder if anyone else from that area saw it around.
I think it was late june 2010.
I'll never forget that animal, I was lucky to see it.

thanks for posting this. What was done with the hide?

This one was shot in Houston B.C. in 1965 by my uncle (right)
the man on the left was an American hunter, so this one ended up in the USA.

The Black one or the White one?

The white one. According to Native legends, it was taboo to hunt or kill one .

The Black one doesn't have a spirit?

Which Natives and Legends?

The point wasnt that the black moose didnt have a spirit. All creatures do. The white ones,or albinos if you like are sacred spirits. My grandmother is Iroquois, and this is their belief.

I do question the modern assertion that Natives did not kill these Spirit animals including the white moose. I suspect that this belief is an evolution of interpretation.

Old stories (not to be written) tell of rituals involving the ritual killing of "Spirit" animals such as the White Dog, the offering of these animals was considered a great event. The "Capturing" of White moose, deer, elk, buffalo and beaver was also a notable event. As well we can speak of other unusually marked or colored animals be it spotted or black elk or blue bears. These "Captured" spirits were significant for both the person the animal revealed and offered itself to, as well as the community as a whole. The "Capturing" of a White Moose was a blessing.

I suspect that many today have forgotten the old ways and unintentionally put a personal view to the killing of these white animals. Some Natives are complaining when a White man kills a White Moose simply out of a racial bias. Nothing like putting culture at the forefront to makes some waves with the media.

I am dealing with a version of this legend evolution today. There are some beavers on a Reserve flooding out a road. The Leaders are unwilling to let the beavers be killed because the Nation are Beaver People and some will be upset. Know that Beaver skins and oils are used in ceremony here and these people have a long history that incudes trapping these animals. Simply put, the history of killing "Spirits" is being forgotten for the sake of political expedience.

Have a talk with your Grandmother. :)
