Good evening all,
Have a question for ya.Anybody ever target whitefish while on open water.

Had an absolute blast catching them in out on the ice at Snipe Lake last month.First ice fishing I had done in 21 years so it was extra special.

We were using white headed jigs and a maggot on the bottom, also used red /copper colored wire worms when they moved off bottom. I never knew whitefish would hit a lure so hard, they would double our rods over when they would slam the wire worms. It was awesome.
Sorry to veer off topic, i'm just very happy to be enjoying the outdoors again. Also like visiting with like minded souls.

Back to the topic. Any advice for catching whites in open water will be appreciated.

Thanx in advance.

I have never done it myself but I have heard that slow trolling weighted panther matens in deep water works well for whites in summer.

I have fished for them in the spring/fall when they are still relatively shallow 6-9 feet of water. Sometimes they can be had trolling your favorite lure/fly (wireworm/ nymph/small jig etc.). I have had more success still fishing under an indicator with wireworms/chironnies/nymphs. I haven't done it in a couple of seasons, maybe I will give it another go this spring!

Nice pics. May I ask, are those latex gloves you're wearing?
