I just bought a lever action 30-30 to pack in and out of bear baits and for protection while I'm camping. I do alot of camping around lake up north. I'm looking for your thoughts on a good scope. It will be used for close range(200yards) max. I need some thing durable as I will be packing it all over. I like to keep the price down as well. Leupold has alway been my choice but I'm not sure what power would be the best. Thanks for the help.

If you have something that's for sell, give me a PM

I'd trade the rig for a Marlin guide gun in 45/70 with open sights....that's what I use...nice and small-easy to handle and knock a bear down with 1 200+ grain slug...
hope you score a nice black this spring

Get a Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36........I've got one on my 25-06, not bulky, low power if need be at a bait or higher power for taking antelope at 400 yards if you switched it to a different gun in the future.

Ya it wasn't my first choice of caliber, but it is mint shape and the price was right. It is a marlin but from what I can see the 366's don't come with open sights but a scoping mounting rail. I'd love to get my first bear, hopefully with the bow. But i'm not gonna let him run away. Take care

Your going to pack it around camping and when you are baiting....With a scope your going to have to baby that thing and keep from bumping it around. Nobody shoots 200 yards for protection and a 30-30 isn't a 200 yard gun. I'm recommending that you use your iron sights and when you need to use the gun for protection you'll be confident that the scope hasn't been knocked around. My 2 cents

if you can't see your target fill up your iron sight on a 30-30 its to far away:D
a pack gun gets bumped around so much a scope would be useless any way

Ya good point guy's, I'm confindent with a scope but this might be good reason to get out to the range more. Open sights it is. Thanks

That's a good decision. I agree with what "ehntr" stated. Although the .444 Marlin or 45/70 would make me feel just a tad more secure.

Another vote for the irons.

I'm not sure if you can even get them anymore, but years ago I put a scope on an old CIL bolt action 30-30 with rings that allowed you to see through them in order to use the open sights as well. It worked pretty well, and was a nice option to have.

I've said it before:

If you scope a lever rifle, when you die you go straight to Hell.

Aren't you worried about your soul??????

Save yourself eternal damnation and shoot iron sights with a lever gun.;)

I'm guessing a 'peep' will get you past the Pearly Gates. But just to be sure, check with Huntinstuff first. ;)

I'm not much of a fan of buck-horn sights either ... I would go for a 'peep' as well.

As for caliber, I'm thinkin' .450 Marlin, using the new LeverRevolution ammunition . . .

I would be in for a trade if anybody looking for a 30-30(larger caliber lever), if not, open sights it is. Out to the range tomorrow, its gonna be an adventure.

Check www.cabelas.ca. They have a new line of scopes for lever-guns.

Well, it depends on the target you wish to take with you to the Pearly Gates.....if there is a flyer on the paper, you might be shovelling coal for a while.....:lol:

I have a cheap (sportsman) 3-9 Bushnell mounted on a 336C Marlin in 35 Rem, shooting 200 gr bullets. It does the job fine, its a great deer rifle for anything inside 150 yrds or so and the quality of the scope is actually pretty good, considering the price. Of course its no Leupold though.

Anyways, the rifle has been banged around and even dropped, but the scope stayed put and turns out to be surprisingly sturdy and remained zeroed in!

You may want to give that a try. If turns out you really don't like it, all you invested is 50 bucks for the scope.

Put a scope on your 30-30 i have 4 elk and 2 deer that have fed my family all taken between 125 and 230 yards. Proofs on the barbecue right now. No one, not even my opinion really matters .
just do what you feel is right for you.
Let em call you a sissy, but when your the one with meat on the table, tell to blow it out their Butts.

i had a scoped 30/30 as well lever model 64 knocked deer on there ass at well over 100 yrds, and moose at 100 like someone punched them dropped dead just my two cents, but if for a quick point shoot protector id leave scope off

You guys know this thread is 3 years old right. The op should have figured the scope issue out by now.

Another forum noob (1 post) discovers the thread through a google search and can't figure out how to read posting date. Mods should delete all recent posts and put it back to archives....AND the right category (guns and ammo)
