What are the garden box looking things for?

It is an experimental design, the purpose of which is to come up with a way of easily topping up backstops without the need to truck in large volumes of material and stack it on top with a track hoe. Backstops slump, and over time can lose the height required to pass inspection so it is prudent to be proactive. Because of about a 1:4 slump ratio, to raise the top with clay alone, requires enough material to widen the base by 4' to gain 1' in elevation. Not only is the equipment to do the job expensive, but the clay must be sourced from somewhere.
If this design works, it should greatly slow slumpage, and when height is lost, can be regained relatively easily by adding another level to the timbers. Who knows, maybe a nice row of shrubs/trees planted in the boxes could even reduce downrange noise?

Hopefully some brain dead folks don't decide to shoot the timbers out. Maybe putting some plate steel on the front would be prudent?

They won’t. Even if tempted...it is handgun range and few bullets would even make it all the way through a timber... or much fun not to see where a bullet hits. And then there is that pesky camera which is always recording. The uprights holding the target boards are made of the same material and with a gusset on the front, last for a year in what would be best described as a pretty high traffic area (for bullets). Fortunately, SPFGA is victim to very little vandalism given the intemperant demeanor of the “maintenance guy”:)
No steel, backstop material needs to be soft.

I knew you'd be on top of it! I'd just hate to see all your hard work go for 💩. Can't wait to see it in person this weekend!

We still have a bit of work to do which will be done outside Range hours so no inconvenience for shooters. I did consider a run of conveyor belt on the shooter side of the timbers but don’t think there will be any need. The conveyor belt (we have a roll) is self healing so doesn’t leave a visible hole to make it “fun”.
