I don't know a whole bunch about cameras, but make sure to allow for a tripod in your budget, as low light shots require longer exposures, tough to hold the camera still enough to take a good picture.

If you want really good northern lights photos you will want a camera with a full frame ccd like the Canon 6D. My wife uses one for the aurora and the camera catches colors and shapes that I couldn't see with my naked eyes while standing beside her.

If you want a camera to shoot Northern Lights you need a DSLR and you need to get good at controlling exposure and aperture manually. It also helps to have a remote to take a shot without touching the camera and tripod. I have had success shooting auroras with a Nikon D80 with the 18-135mm lens that it came with. You don't need to break the bank to photograph them.

You can get away with almost any dslr , most of the new or slightly date cameras should be pretty good.I've taken great pictures with my old Nikon d40x and it's really old. The only issue I found with that old camera was if you wanted prints done you were limit to Fairly small prints. I now use a Nikon D5500 and it definitely can take very nice photos and I can put up good size canvas prints on the wall. I'm have no favorite brand though canon or Nikon have both very capable entry level dslr cameras that can take great pictures of the aurora .I only stick with Nikon because I have collection lenses for them.

You'll need a DSLR with a good tripod, remote shutter release and wide angle lens. I've found exposures in the 30 second range work best for the northern lights and starscapes.

Any decent DSLR will do. What you really need is a lens with the greatest aperture opening and width angle you can afford. This will allow more light to reach the image sensor and allow you to take the shot quicker resulting in a sharper image.

If your not yet a dedicated photographer you may well appreciate the smaller size of a mirrorless camer such as an Olympus omd, fujifilm X, or a Sony.
Also, if your on a tight budget don't forget about the used market. There are lots of excellent cameras selling at significantly discounted prices on Kijiji or in a good dealers used section.
