Hi there,

On the weekend the screw on my sling came out of my rifle causing it to fall to the ground barrel first. I later in the day went to shoot it to ensure the sights were still on and had a very loud bang happen! then looked at the barrel and it was split!

Am I able to get this fixed or am i better off shopping for a new 300 win mag?

Luckily nothing else happened!

Thanks!

WOW!

nothing was in the bore?

well my opinion is thread a new barrel on there and count yourself lucky!

for clarity
*have a gunsmith inspect it and thread a new barrel on

x2.

Have a good long chat with a gunsmith about this.
I recommend Henry Remple if you're in the Calgary area.

And always check the bore for obstructions if the muzzle makes contact with the ground. You were lucky to not be injured this time, you might not be so lucky next time.

Looks like you got something stuck in the bore when the barrel hit the ground- a taped muzzle is your friend!
Yup, re-barrel and count your lucky stars.......

Maybe it's time for a sling shot.

Take this opportunity to get a better-grade, fatter barrel screwed on, and a bit of accurizing done as well. Get a stock and trigger upgrade. They'll have to mill out the stock for a better barrel anyway assuming you're ditching the spaghetti-barrel.

A roll of red electrical tape is a good idea too. Might save you from losing your arm(s) some day.

Good thing you were not hurt
Depending on ones home owner insurance policy it may be covered under your insurance. Depending on deductible as to whether or not it's worth it and what type of firearm it is

What model firearm it may be easy to find a take off barrel if its a 700 or t3

The gun is a savage 114 in 300 win mag, think it was only 800 bucks or so probably not worth trying to save is what im thinking.

time for a new one i guess! any suggestions on replacements?

Have your action inspected and buy a used barrel or prefit and headspace gauges, sav wrench very easy to do the swap yourself on those with used barrel gauges and wrench should be not much over $200 or cheaper if you can borrow tools and gauges

Probably not a good suggestion for this OP to be doing his own barrel changes. To the OP, I would suggest you selll the action for 350 and buy a new rifle. It will work out a lot cheaper.

If he is not comfortable with it im sure most smiths wouldnt charge him an arm and leg to headspace and tighten a nut. Or find a member here to lend a hand its a very economical fix for his situation maybe some gun maintenance and inspection lessons also lol.

Exactly, anyone that would fire a rifle without checking for obstructions after it fell muzzle first into the ground, is not someone that I would want to have changing a barrel.

For the record I did inspect the barrel after it hit the ground and ensured that there was nothing stuck in it.

Thanks

The barrel does not have to be totally obstructed to split when fired. It would be quite a coincidence for the barrel to split with the first shot, after being dropped muzzle first to the ground, if there was no foreign material in the barrel as a result of the drop.

Sorry but I strongly suggest you go see an optometrist. Barrels that aren't obstructed just don't split. Sorry for your troubles and many, including me, have tried to make constructive suggestions but please lets not insult each others intelligence.

Damn I guess you’re unlucky!

I dropped my girlfriends .308 on the concrete when it fell off the Arms day the range. Muzzle contacted the ground and the scope cap got busted. Little bit of a gouge on the outside of the barrel, but it shot sub-MOA a bit later.
