I previously posted this pic in late May 2016 using Photobucket and lost it as I wasn’t paying the upgrade fee.

I believe it’s a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, part of the woodpecker family, he took a disliking to my Owl and hammered away at it for days.

I believe this little guy’s a Downey woodpecker, he’s very persistent & been hammering away at the Owl for 3 days now and today he finally poked a hole in its head.

Strange behavior, a few pics to share.

Neat pics !

And FWIW, pics on the bucket aren't lost....you just can't host them anywhere. But there's nothing to stop you from retrieving them.

I hate woodpeckers. Kills my trees. Some look like a machine gun got at them. Otherwise, nice looking birds. Funny how they learn that an owl becomes harmless.

Had a woodpecker pecking on the top of my metal clad chimney once, thought it was a drive by shooting first time i heard it. An owl on the chimney like the one you have fixed the issue.

In February you will probably have owls hooting at your fake owl. I had two fake owls over my raspberries and every Feb. two or three owls would show up in heat and hoot at my scareowls for 4 or five days.

.

If woodpeckers are constantly drilling your trees they are doing it because they are already dying feeding on the bugs, ants and whatever else is infesting your trees and are what is actually killing them. Woodpeckers may peck on all sorts of things thinking there is food inside but won't stay long if they don't find anything. They will also peck on things that will make a loud noise like tin roofs, mostly in the spring usually to attract the attention of a mate.

I think the sapsucker strategy is to bleed sap which attracts the insects they then feed on ... and several complete bleed rings on a small diameter tree .... will usually die. Unfortunately, the only trees that die are ones that cost more than $90.
