Hey,
Hope everyone's season is going well!

I recently filled my general WT tag on a decent buck. I think I am going to try and euro him myself. I am curious if anyone has any experience doing this? specifically the bleaching part. I see a lot of videos of people using a type of Salon hydrogen peroxide, I don't know how easy this is to find in Canada? Anyway just curious if anyone else has a suggestion of what to use for this step and where to get it?

Cheers.

I get mine at Sally's Beauty Supply. Its the cheapest you'll find. the 40 vol. developer they sell thats mixed with dyes for hair dying is about 18% peroxide and works pretty well. I just paint it on, put the whole works in a garbage bag (heat helps the process) and leave it over night and pressure wash it off.

I've used the salon stuff, it works but so does 35% peroxide available at aaa taxidermy supplies

I just use the over the counter hair bleach from the drug store. Let it sit 24 hours and rinse.

All the pics have disappeared since Photobucket got greedy, but here are some of the ones I've done.

I bought the 3% Hydrogen Peroxide from Walmart. I let it soak for 6days and turned out great. Just takes longer to do is all. And if you whiten any of the antler, use MinWax stain in the Provincial color to touch it up. It works great as well.

It's not hard to do, you get personal satisfaction out of it and save money too.
If you get good at it you can make some cash on the side, had people drop off thier heads over winter, Jan/feb wk-ends I would pick away at them, do various mounts etc to the persons liking, fun, easy money.

I've used the exact same process mentioned by madball and it worked great. The peroxide is like $10 a bottle and packet of the whitener I believe was like $3.

I did the pressure washing up front. If you get the skull as clean as possible up front then it's just an exercise of painting on the peroxide\whitener mix (using gloves in a decently ventilated area of course) and letting it sit. I even spread it up into the nasal cavity and skull cavity. Wrap it in a plastic bag and let it sit for a day or two. You can hose or rinse it off afterwards and you should be good.

Just be careful not to get too much or any of the whitener on the antlers. I've read\heard it could discolor them. I wrapped tin foil around the bases of the antlers and a ring of tape to keep them in place. Turned out great. I've received a number of compliments and I'm by no means an expert. There's also some great posts on here as well I remember reading through last season. A quick search should pull up some great info as well.

Simmering in OxiClean works well too. No matter what you do make sure you de-grease it in dish soap first tho.

I like getting whoever has bugs to do it. I mean i can make skull soup at home but one looses the nose scrolls that I think give it a complete look.

I followed Kurt505's thread and used dollar store peroxide and cotton balls. Easy stuff and turned out great. It was my first time.

Take another pic of that head. Including the horns. Something doesn't look right
