Wow lots of cool stuff in that range. Do your homework as their are many neat things you can or cannot do with the right or wrong machines.

Humminbird helix 7 with GPS is a very nice unit, and it will be well within that price range.

You would have more than enough money to get him a Helix 7 as well as a new Vexilar or Marcum flasher. Heck, you would still have enough left over even with both those items to get him an underwater camera for the ice season!

There is plenty you could get with that size of budget, and I would advise against blowing it all on 1 extra-fancy sonar unit. There is not a huge difference between a 500-600 dollar sonar and a 1100 dollar one other than perhaps screen size and more storage space. Again, you're probably better off getting him a nice package of a few different things than a over-the-top single unit.

First question is if you have an electric trolling motor that can be networked?

Minn Kota? Get a Humminbird
Motorguide? Get a Lowrance.
Neither (and don’t plan on one)? Get a Garmin

Been checking out reviews on the helix 7 and it seems 50/50 love hate. The Garmin GPSMAP 741 XS got a good review on a site I checked out but I can't seem to find anymore from just the average Joe that bought one. Anybody out there have one?

Get him a Ice 55 hummingbird and the nice underwater camera probably about 1200 bucks for both
