On Friday, a buddy & I headed to the Red Deer River for opening day.Fished for a couple hours before dark,'til a little after dark.Didn't feel up to the drive home,so sat around a campfire telling lies with 3 young guys from Calgary who were camping nearby;then, we crashed in the car until 5am,fished a little more & headed home. Caught a couple fish in the morning, but nothing like that magic twilight hour. We caught goldeye, walleye, burbot & sauger. 3 of the 'eyes were well over keeper size & went home with my partner,as well as a couple of nearly 30" burbs & a few goldeye. Plenty more fish were released to be caught another day.
Some pics:

We tried flyfishing & throwing hardware with the spincast with no luck;all fish were taken on the good ol' pickerel rig. My partner even had a doubleheader
at one point...

A walleye ate his minnow,& a clam ate his bell sinker! Too funny!

As usual on the Red Deer,we caught a good variety of fish & had fun.
It has been a great May long(so far!).

Very nice fishes, I love those walleyes you caught. Pretty heavy looking, must have been a fight. I plan on fishing the RDR as well, but don't know where a good spot is at, since this is my first time on this river. If you don't mind sharing the places where the walleyes are at, it would be very appericiated.

Nice work guys! i really want to get out and hit up some wally's on the fly rod... I have yet to catch one on the fly! I only have a sink tip rod though, do you think that will get deep enough? How deep is Pine Coulee anybody know?

I don't know how deep PCR is;pretty sure a sink tip would be fine, though.
I'll bet you could even fish a wooley bugger or leech under an indicator & do alright at Pine Coulee.

Yeah,it's east of Drum.If you've been in the area, you'd recognize the background in the pics.I'd be more specific, but I've been sworn to secrecy.:innocent:

Did the walleye all average the same size at Pine Coulee or were they all generally the same size?

Very little size variation at PCR;if you're looking to catch a biggun, don't go to Pine Coulee.

Thanks for sharing the great pics.
Is that an elastic between your bell sinker and the rig? Never seen that before?

That's a common rig for easy break off in case lead gets stuck in the rocks, I use it when I'm fishing reservoir dams, sure does keep frustration levels down :)

Deeper drop offs will produce bigger fish, but its one in 40-50 fish that will be around 3lb, maybe 4lb this year.

Yeah, better to lose just your weight, rather than the whole rig.
