Resharpening Auger Blades

Anyone have luck in resharpening auger blades? Mine are off of an 8” Ion electric. I already replaced the blades and was planning on taking the used set in to a shop to get them resharpened but was told by another outdoorsmen that they are “laser sharpened” and sharpening will not be successful. Who’s tried it? Thanks Ken

I thought I could sharpen them myself also and miserably failed and ended up buying a new set. Some guys have mentioned on here that they have been successful in sharpening them but I think many have mentioned that they take them to a shop to get sharpened. they way they sit on the auger I think that they have to be sharpened precisely with the angle that they sit on, too much and they will cut too hard and not enough and they wont cut at all.

I have the same auger (Ion 8") and just finished doing mine with my Lansky. The 30* profile on the Lansky matched the auger blade profile perfectly. Tried them out the other day and they cut like new.

I took my time and had to get a couple nicks out but it seemed to work well.

For the average guy....Sharpen the top edge only. The bottom edge (the edge that sits on the ice) is best left alone. Top edge only and sharpen unill you can feel a slight burr form Leave the burr there, resist the urge to knock it off from the bottom edge. Go cut your holes and the burr will fall off. This is the most fool proof way of sharpening auger blades but still requires some knowledge and skill on sharpening steel.

I got a auger blade sharpener from the fishing hole, twice a season I run it over the blades and It works pretty good

Any recommendations for a self sharpening system(eg. Lansky) that can be purchased for the Strikemaster Lazermag blades or is a guy better off to take them to a sharpening shop as has already been mentioned?

I tried sharpening mine and it didn't work. The blade itself was sharp but if its not the exact angle that it is supposed to be it won't cut at all. Now I just treat the blades as being disposable.

If you know what you are doing a belt sander, or even sand paper on a piece of glass and buffing wheel will touch up your blade to razor sharp very quickly. Lansky diamond stone will work too but you must work very carefully and slowly to ensure you keep the exact angle over the whole edge.

Never sharpen the bottom and make sure you keep the exact top angle. You can also use shims to offset changes in the angle that sometimes occurs due to sharpening or from dropping the auger on its cutting edge and bending the wings.

No idea if they work for other auger brands.

My auger cut like crap when I was at Cold Lake 10 days ago so I decided to follow Iromanchuk’s advice.

Therefore I have to give a positive shout out for R&R Sharpening. Had my stealth stx 10” done last week after I got back and now it drills like a hot knife through butter. Had my doubts when I picked it up as I noticed they sharpened the bottom of the blade not the top as I expected. I was assured by the staff it was done correctly and to their credit it worked exactly as they promised and much, much better than I expected. Just like new again.

Great price too. $15.75 (GST included). Dropped it off Monday at noon and was called Tuesday at 4pm that it was ready. Less than the $95 for a new set of blades that I bought “just in case”. Oh well, I have a spare set now.

llllllllLNo one can sharpen the Lazermag blades. Strikemaster says return to them for sharpening need a computerized machine to do it. I found the best thing was to always keep a spare set with you. Amazon usually has good price but 2 Brothers small engine in Cgy. is a dealer and can get them quicker for about the same price. Around 120

I’ve tried sharpening my laser mag blades once before and failed but I don’t think I’m ready to give up . I might try some of the advice on here and just try sharpening the top part of the blade and leave the burr.

Foothills sharpening right outside of Okotoks is my go to Guy for sharpening all my blades. $8.00 per blade and great customer service. They even sharpened my point for free....

Did up 3 sets of 10" Eskimo power auger blades this am with a 1"x3" Norton stone,but might have to try the buffing wheel and see if it is as good.

These are the guys I use too, sometimes a few days wait but great prices and an old fashioned small business that does exceptional work, if it’s at all convenient help them out. It’s far cheaper than new blades, can’t recall the exact price but it was under $15 for sure, will last all season unless you Drill like 20 per trip.

Always good to have a spare set anyways. Break off a blade after driving 4 hours to Cold Lake and you wont be happy. I have 2 sets and they get a fresh shave before each season. Usually around this time i'll change to the second set.

He does a great job. At the end of each season I take both sets of Rapala 10" auger blades for a touch up so they start each season in like new condition. About $20 per pair compared to $60 for new ones...

Same here. I’m glad I had an extra set when I discovered this same thing out on the lake..
