Are there different components in a saltwater outboard compared to freshwater?

Only difference I have “heard” about is some of the merc saltwater had a stainless cooling water tube and stories of an extra anode. There was also a case or two of the older design engine being branded with the salt water logo as carry over of parts from previous years. The general consensus is you don’t need a special sticker that says salt water, most brands don’t even have a salt water series.

If using a freshwater kicker in the salt be sure to take it off and completely rinse, wipe and flush with freshwater. You can use a saltwater kicker in freshwater no problem. Saltwater motors have more anti corrosion components and parts in them

Where are these salt water rated kickers? Most popular kickers on the west cost is the Yamaha T series (I have a 9.9) and the Mercury Pro kicker is becoming popular as well. There is no freshwater and saltwater versions. They are all saltwater rated like pretty much all outboards.
