BREAKING NEWS: Crews searching Lake Newell
Updated: Tue Jun. 02 2009 18:54:07

Emergency crews are at a lake south of the town of Brooks searching for someone believed to have fallen out of a boat.

Crews are searching Lake Newell, about 10 Kilometres south of Brooks.

Right now there are six search and rescue boats on the water and a helicopter has also been called in to help.

RCMP is also at the scene and is getting support from the Brooks Fire Department and EMS service.

The last tragic boating accident on Lake Newell happened last fall when a five year old girl died.

The girl's family boat hit a rock and started taking on water.

They called 911 and a rescue boat was able to get to all five members of the family but on the way back to land the rescue boat ran into trouble and capsized.

Janessa Lyn Toney got caught under the capsized boat and drowned.

CTV News has a crew on the way to the scene and we are monitoring the developments on this breaking story.

Sure hope this comes to a good end. Hope this isn't one of our members, or anyone for that matter.

If they were on the lake then sadly they were one of us..maybe not the forum but an outdoors person. I hope this is one of those happy ending stories...I like those ones they almost make the news tolerable:)

That sucks. Not a rescue mission, but a recovery. Coming from the East Coast I am only too aware of what 'going over the side' means. Lost a few close friends that way.:(

We'll say a little prayer for a miracle tonight 'cause ya just never know.

Missing brothers presumed drowned at Lake Newell

Search and rescue efforts on Lake Newell for a teenaged boy and his older brother have turned into a recovery effort.

They are now presumed drowned.

A third teen, was rescued thanks to the quick thinking of an area resident of the popular lake community.

RCMP say a canoe carrying the three males, two 15-year olds and a 23-year-old, capsized near the Lake Newell Resort about 15 kilometres south of Brooks.

It happened around 5 o'clock.

CTV News has learned a nearby resident was the first to arrive on scene when he heard the frantic cries for help from the water.

Police and residents say the man jumped onto his Sea-doo and managed to rescue one of the 15-year-old boys.

Other residents in the lake community saw the commotion and took their personal boats onto the lake and began combing the water for the two missing brothers.

Not long after, emergency crews arrived. A helicopter was brought in to survey the scene from above, while search and rescue boats from both Brooks and Lethbridge searched the water.

Divers also made numerous attempts to locate the missing males.

RCMP say the trio were out fishing in water approximately 6 metres deep, and that lake conditions were calm at the time.

Searchers say the murky water made it difficult to try and locate the missing males.

CTV News has learned none of the boaters were wearing life jackets.

They are investigating whether alcohol played a factor.

The search for the missing brothers, whose names have not been released, will resume early Wednesday morning.

No freakin' life Jacket's, AGAIN ! Being that close to shore, the likely hood of them surviving WITH Life Jackets ON would most likely have been 100% !

God, what a waste....

Take note, those of you who choose not to wear your PFD's and those of you who have Kids (like me). Don't let them anywhere NEAR a boat, canoe or water Rec. vehicle if they choose not to wear a PFD and ESPECIALLY at this time of the year.

I understand we can't watch the young adults all the time and that they make their own choices (especially when they KNOW we're not watching) but still..., too many adults set bad examples by not wearing their PFD's. Continually setting an example from when the kids first start boating can make a HUGE difference as to whether or not they wear a PFD when they are out by themselves.

My Profound condolences to the family of these young men and hopefully they will be found very soon....
