I know this is a question of weather....however I am leaving for posting to cold lake. I have a 12 aluminium boat, wondering if it is worth hauling out. I can sell it here in NS, if 12 is to small for this lake. As I said, I understand it depends on the day...just looking for feedback from those that have time on the lake.

there are times and areas when that is fine but 16 ft+is better/safer. other smaller lakes close by but even then 16 is better, lots of used 4 sale locally.caught my first trout 35 years ago.

Cold Lake can get very rough very fast. I think you would be very limited as to when you could be on the water with your 12ft. Getting quickly to safety could be a challenge.

It would work you just need to pay more careful attention to the forecasts and stick to going out on nice days. That is what I do with my kayak and I haven't been caught off guard yet. Windfinder superforecast is the best source for wind forecasts, if it and weather network both agree that it is supposed to be calm it is highly unlikely it won't be.

If you stay in the bay that the Prov boat launch is in you may be alright.

I’ve only been there once so I’ve precious little experience on that lake but I would take the boat. You just have to pick your days. We were there for a week and had one day with a little chop

The rest of the week the lake looked like glass.

If your local you’ll just fish the days it’s calm.

I downsized to a 14' crestlimer for the simple reason there is a bunch of other lakes all around this area that is easier to get a smaller boat in especially by yourself.
I have been out in some rough water with it but like mentioned before watch the weather, too rough for cold lake head over to little bear or Ethel much smaller lakes and you can still enjoy the day.
If your into hunting, fishing, outdoor activities with little to know restrictions this area is awesome, lots of crown land and lakes.
Enjoy your posting.

Search for cold lake. Use this to plan your day, not only for "if" and "when" you will head out but also for what side of the lake is going to be safest to launch on. Remember to look at max speed not just the average. You will have to learn to gauge what wind speed is your limit for your boat on that particular lake. Probably anything over 15mph (around 15kn) is getting close.

Rather then haul it cross country, sell it. Buy a 14-16’ here.

Ahhh but if you haul it here it makes you money cuz you claim the trailer as mileage too along with the tow vehicle....all part of the posting cost to the government:sHa_shakeshout:

That’s a better plan. A wide and deep 14 with a 20” transom and a 20hp is much more capable and safe on that lake. Although I own a bigger boat I’ve been from one end to the other with my 14’ on the nice days. Also perfect for the other lakes around the area, which is why I bring it when I head over that way.
