Just noticed a blue algae advisory for Cold Lake. Anybody been out lately? How bad is it? Heading out next week for a week if fishing.

When we were there last week there was lots of tree pollen in the water . Even my kids asked about it . Never saw anything resembling blue green algae but I'm no expert.

Not bad at all.

Last week there was a slight bit of green algae at French Bay. Most spots the water was clear as usual and you could sight fish in shallower water.

I've noticed the alga (little green specks) suspended in the water near the surface since early June. We haven't fished Cold Lake much but don't remember seeing it before. We have had some very hot days on the lake and the surface temperature gets to be low 70s according to our sonar.

The advisory states that the bloom is so far localized to the marina.

Was there last year and the Cyanobacteria was totally disgusting. So bad in fact that we left after a day and a half of a 5 day trip. I spoke to other locals this spring about it and they said they have never seen it in the lake. When I showed them the photo's they were amazed.

what part of the lake?

It covered very large area's. 2/3rds of the south shore in very large patches out to at least a km or more. The entire east end and about 1/4 of the north shore on the east side. I have never seen it on cold lake before but there was sure lots of it last year. When we were there it was also very hot and very calm. We have been there before during hot calm spells but have never seen the blue green before.

I used to live up in the Peace Country and would go to Winagami Lake in the 70's. The algae there was brutal

Have heard of advisories before on Cold Lake primary around the Marina, the beach in town, and in French bay. Doesn't the City dump its treated waste water into Cold Lake itself? This along with storm water would be the primary cause as why it is on the southern shoreline.

Rest of lake usually quite good but did notice more algae suspended in the water column this year as compare to other years. Creeks/Rivers have been dumping into Cold Lake quite a bit more this year as compared to normal as there have been some quite heavy rain storms off/on up there this year.
