Anyone have any ideas of an effective magpie trap design(or one available on the market) The things have been attacking my dogs and around 20 seem to be living in my yard. I have a friend who will use them for taxidermy so i want to catch some. Any tips appreciated.:D

You can buy them at most farmer coops. They work great

I built one out of chicken wire and some 2 x 2's . Just built a basic cage, no floor and cut a couple of 5-6 inch holes in the top. I used dog food for bait because that's what they were after in my yard. They find the hole in and drop down but are unable to fly out. Never actually seen a commercially made one but I have heard of them. 8)

The blue prints to make a magpie trap are available on alberta ag web site. I've made about half a dozen over the years and they work good. Hope this helps.

All i have been able to catch is starlings. The magpies walk around my trap(roof entrance) and haven't entered. At least i caught the starlings that come kill the baby robins in our tree every year. Should i switch from dogfood to some porcupine meat or something?

Try the entrance at the bottom with a funnel shape they will walk right in.

Or maybe cut the holes a little bigger, to make them feel more comfortable about jumping in.:D
