Worms should work fine for trout if you are going for the cheap and digging them out of your garden. Rapalas might not be so cheap since there's quite a few places to get all snagged up.
If you are night fishing for burbs, you could use a lump of old bacon or some cheap bacon ends and fry up the rest you don't use :)
And if you want to go real cheap, get a jig head, cut up some old clothes into shapes of bait fish, attach the cloth to the jig head like you would do with a rubber jig. It sounds wierd but it's worked for me when I ran out jigs when I was travelling, caught a two foot Saratoga in Australia. And those who say fish are smart and picky with lures :tongue2:

hard to dig out worms in our gardens..too many tree roots in the yard...will likely just pick them up at a huckey or wherever along the way....i dont know if i'm gonna go for burbot but may end up gettin one to bite, just hope i dont have my usual luck of nailing a
sucker...lol

Smelt is for sale almost anywhere that sells bait. I found that superstore is the cheapest though, but they come in a big quantity. Frozen seafood section, 8 bucks I think. I split the bag up into 8-10 ziploc sandwich bags for each trip. Cheaper than buying the little bags of smelt at Wholesale, but not always better.
Unless you are in a boat, rapala's need to be fished with technique to catch more fish, while not snagging and losing that 8 dollar lure. I, as well as many other anglers rely on the spoons, specifically the Len Thompson's. Cheap, and effective on a wide range of species.

If you are close to the T&T supermarkets, they sell bags of smelts for really cheap. One guy told me that he even got them to sort out the sizes he wanted at the counter to seal up in a new bag.
This winter I snagged a bunch of large bags (about 750g each) on sale for $3 each, you can't beat that deal anywhere. They normally come in assorted sizes so it can be handy when you are targeting different species.
Like Fisherguy said, ziploc them in smaller bags and they only take a few hours to thaw for fishing. Each smelt is individually frozen with a glaze of ice so you aren't defrosting a big block of smelts.

I live right by the res, and have fished it a bunch of times so far. Only caught one small pike, and have lost 2 or 3 others. Caught the pike with a small spoon, but have also used a worm to get a bite. The water is really low in a lot of parts, so there is a lot of snags out there. It is convienient for me to fish here, but I think I need to explore some new areas as all the other people fishing there aren't having a lot of luck either.
