Good morning! I was wondering how people use shrimp for trout bait? Do you buy one of those frozen shrimp rings and use those shrimp? How large of a piece or the entire shrimp? Do you salt them beforehand? Thanks for any tips on this!

I heat mine up a bit in butter and garlic for 1-2 mins. Then let it cool a bit and pour into a container to keep smell on. Seems to work better than raw shrimp.

Heating it also makes it stay on hook a bit better I find. Make sure to un-thaw it before putting it on hook. Otherwise it just shatters and doesn’t stay on.

I cut off a small piece for the hook of my choosing that day.

If you don’t catch fish at least you have a snack ;-), or your nephew sneaks them and you don’t realize it until you are out of bait. Little bugger.

I have used both cooked and raw shrimp. I take cooked so I can eat them too.

I put enough shrimp on to cover jig hook. Usually just bite off a little piece to make the remaining tail piece the size I want then put it on the hook.

Some guys like to cook them in butter and garlic to give them more scent. I can't do that though, if I did there would be no way the shrimp would last long enough to become bait lol.

I use them cooked. Boil them for longer than normal so they are firmer and more rubbery so they stay on the hook better. I have tried raw ones too but for those you need ones with the shell. They stay hooked if you hook them through the shell otherwise the raw ones fall off the hook very quickly.

I use them cooked or uncooked. Don’t recall much of a difference in terms of effectiveness, but they do stay on a little better while cooked. A shrimp ring or loose bag of shrimp work fine.

I’ve been dousing mine in pink shrimp flavoured “lunker lotion” and find it helps.

Wouldn’t the canned shrimp be a lot cheaper and a perfect size for trout, versus buying a shrimp ring and cutting it to size. I think the cans have 3 different sizes and are less than $5.

The canned shrimp are too soft compared to cooked fresh or thawed frozen shrimp.

I was ice fishing at Kinky Lake a few years back. A guy that I met on the lake gave me a bunch of tips for catching brookies. He was a guide in the area.

He told me to save the tails of shrimp when you eat shrimp. You never get all the meat out when you eat them. With a hook you can get that last little bit out and it costs nothing.

That night I went to BP's in Hinton and saved the 6 tails that came with my shrimp skewer and caught fish with them the next day.

It really feels good to be resourceful.

On a side note. I have recently tried those minnows in a bag that never go bad. It has saved me money on bait. Seemed to work fine for lake trout and walleye.

For the cocktail sauce, combine chili sauce, ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce. :)

A shrimp ring would be cheaper. $5 for a shrimp ring in Walmart. Only take out what you need for the day in a zip lock bag. One $5 shrimp ring will last an entire year.

If you really think about it shrimp is cheap bait. A bag from Walmart with 60-70 shrimp is like 12 bucks. Cut each one in 2-3 pieces and that’s up to 200 baited hooks. What’s the cost for the equivalent bait using anything else. Not that you won’t eat half of them yourself lol

I don't get why anyone would buy a package of worms instead of a shrimp ring. Costs the same and the shrimp make for a tasty snack lol.

Yes..... but I have a hard time keeping the cocktail sauce from washing off.

I’m kinda picky when I eat shrimp, and it’s not a snack I’d eat while fishing. I just buy a bag and it’ll last me a year or 2. I’m sure the fish aren’t picky.

Usually just buy a shrimp ring...and bag it into zip locks...Its may go to for trout..But have caught everything with it.

Safeway had some small shrimp meat on sale. It's already small enough to bait the hook. Caught a nice rainbow and had it for dinner :sHa_shakeshout:
