I’m curious if there are other owners of a 1998 GMC 1500 Sierra with very high km , this is my daily driver ,bought it in 2003 , original 4.3 Vortec, only replaced the intake manifold gasket, water pump, several fuel pumps , no lifter rattle , doesn’t smoke when I start up or idling ,I use 5w30 Chevron Full Synthetic oil, original tranny , oil and filter change of tranny every year

I've got 360,000km on a 5700 vortec 97 k1500 I've owned since new. Just finally replaced the water pump and fuel pump. Doesn't burn anything but leaks a bit.
The GMT-400 series are great trucks that last if you look after them. Sounds like you do. :acigar:

Yeah that series of trucks is great. I have a 1997 GMC 2500 5.7L Vortec. Only 209,000 km but a damn good truck, only complaint is the power and fuel economy compared to more modern stuff just ain’t there.

Got a '96 Z71 5.7, near 330,000kms, one new transmission (May 2013) and about $1000
in sensor,EGR, coil sprk pulgs type parts in 2017. I have a new Delco fuel pump
on the ready for when the one on truck craps out. I keep it clean & change
the synthetic oil roughly every 5000kms (and no, I don't need a stupid "change oil"
light to bother me every few thousand kms to flash on the dash)

I remember reading in those 'Used Truck' books by Phil Edmonston how these series of trucks were:
"Good trucks, when they are running"..that guy put down nearly all vechs he reviewed.
To me, the 96-98 chevy's were the best trucks ever made & mine is still "running" just fine Phil.

Gm built’em right back then, back when they built them in Ontario. I had a 1996 5L Sierra 375 000km probably would of got to 500 000 but sold it before then.

I have 450,000km now. All original drivetrain and front end less a pitman arm and cv shafts. This has been the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Not babied either it has been bush bashing on hunting and fishing trips many times, pulled equipment trailer with bobcat etc. I have used it as a work truck for the last 3.5 years and weighs in at 7500#’s with me in it for this time frame. I’ve done the regular maintenance type items brakes water and fuel pumps, injectors. Nothing major and it has never left me stranded.
Oh ya it’s the 7.4 litter and gets the same mileage as my brothers 06 Chevy 6 liter

Fuel pumps are the weak link on these trucks , I have put in 4 in the 15 years I have owned

Great looking trucks, good engines, mediocre auto trans, crappy brakes.

Just let one go to insurance after a light deer hit...after realizing I dont like anything after 1998 maybe I should have fixed it.

Envious of you guys with good ones, most here are beaters.

If you run them down below a quarter tank it is hard on the pumps as they are cooled by having fuel in the tanks. Also ac-delco pumps are more expensive but are supposed to last longer.

What you say is true about running below a quarter of a tank, I always fill up at 1/2 a tank, change my fuel filter , usually can get 100,000 km before the pump needs replaced

Yeah brakes have never been a strong suit of these trucks but you get used to them.

I’m always glad to have the NV4500 instead of the 4L60.
