For some reason my first post was taken down. Anywho in Alberta effective 1/1/19 common law will equal married status.

Virtually nothing in the news about this - the bill passed last reading but could only find old articles

Not even close actually. Does noone believe in self determination any more? This current government wants to control everything we do

Awwww, C’mon now. The government is just looking out for our best interests. You know, so we act appropriatly. Think of the government as our babysitter.

I am HAPPY to litigate the old equitable principles to death, as long as you are willing to pay.

More often than not it was like nailing Jello to a wall.

Nothing wrong with de institutionalizing marriage as a separate class of people, given the reality that more than half do not get married anyway. As for the ground rules set out in the MPA, they work fine. Most important CHANGE is valuation at date of SEPARATION. Not date of Trial.

With Alberta's economy in the boom times, Divorces were taking years, and were being dragged out to scoop what was accumulated post separation. Now with Date of Separation, you might as well settle as the numbers will not change, at least not easily.
