Thinking we've become way too cosy with China. They're getting to the point where they can flex their muscles and are willing to do so, unlike most of the Western powers.

Canadians in general don't like bullies. Say "bugger them, short term pain, long term gain", impose an import tariff sufficient to hurt them. Be willing to put up with the retaliatory pain, and no to huwei (sp?). The trade imbalance is hugely in China's favour, so... whatever. Yes, this would be minor enough issue to China, and major to Canada, but time to wean ourselves off their feces. The TPP was specifically to get around China by the rest of the trading/friends partners.

Nothing like what the Chinese are capable of. They hold a very significant portion of the US national debt.

US who has China’s money or China who lent it to the Us?

China also enjoys a 260 billion dollar trade imbalance with the US that they hugely benefit from. They don't hold any real cards against the US.

I think Canada's best strategy against China is to use their own protectionist rules against them. If they don't let our stuff in unfettered then we don't let their stuff in unfettered. That way we aren't just saying NO but instead using a passive aggressive tactic to call out their BS policies at the same time keeping out spyware. It still shocks me how much we've opened up our country and businesses and resources to China without demanding reciprocal access to their markets etc. Worst case I'd rather see Canada take a financial hit then to bend over for those communists.

See how banks and foreign debt was handled by Iceland.

They also have an armed force of 2 million and who'd have thought they could put together a landing on the far side of the moon, neither the US or Russia has done that yet. Just the fact that were' talking about adopting a Chinese computer system says a lot. They're becoming a Super power and playing the role.

Or the Canadian troops that helped defend Hong Kong in WW2. My uncle was one and after some horrific battles where they were horribly outnumbered and most were killed, spent time in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. He didnt care much for Japan after that.

Two different battles, while the Canadians were defending British Hong Kong, Mao was in the hinterland fighting Chiang kai shek with a hate on for both of them plus the Japs.

Shiny pony and the rest of the socialist minded members of our society should be overjoyed that their heroes from Beijing are standing up for their rights against our evil democratic/capitalist society. How dare we limit their right to supply and install equipment, for the purpose of national espionage, on our soil. :sign0161:

OT- Beijing likely anticipates an initial rebuttal that will quickly downgrade to a Neville Chamberlain like appeasement strategy. They have been doing this to their neighbours for decades while the rest of the world looked the other way, why should this time be any different?:angry3:

For those that don't know the backstory linking Huawei Corp. and ZTE Corp. to corporate and national espionage:

China over the centuries has pretty well stayed within it's own territory. Although that appears to be their psyche, I don't want to bet on it now. Regardless, just like the 1800's was England's century, and the 1900's America's, it certainly looks like the 2000's' will be China's.

Unless Europe gets all its excrement in a pile. Not likely to happen the way it looks now.

Iphone
Leveno computers
Prada - the real ones, not the fake

Japan once was known for "racist term for Japanese crap", and now known for quality. Germany after the war had a time where products were not known for quality, and China is working on improving their quality. Why? Because the world demands better quality.

You are correct. Unfortunately so did Harper and the Conservatives and most of the provinces. BC pretty much sold the whole lower mainland to them and they have a good hold on to Alberta's oil sands. Quebec is still selling them Canadian passports. This may be a good eye opener on what the reality is on dealing with the Chinese......just don't do it !!!!! Stop buying their crap, and stop letting them in.

The many the ol mighty dollar talks.
Chinese immigrants are only as honest as they have to be and Canada does not have a great track record at holding them to account. They learned the hard way back home in China how to play hard ball so it's best not to do business with them in the first place. In BC the billions in money laundering, the real estate scams, ICBC scams, birth tourism and the fentanyl crisis are all directly perpetrated by recent Chinese immigrants.

I do not know how China can be WTO member and how the western leaders can be so blind.
They cheat, forfeit, steal technology left and right and this is what they have done for more than 30 years.

When Microsoft and some other silicon valley companies complained a couple of years ago, they broadcasted bulldozers destroying pirated software. Nothing really changed.
Government financed companies buy small innovative companies and steal their technologies in this way. They bought a robotic small company form Bayern and once the technology transfer was done they bankrupted the company. Not to mentioned the companies which are forced to go into a partnership if they want to enter Chinese market. When Trump accuses them for cheating, they promise to increase imports and they will continue to do, whatever they have done.
Rolex, GUCCI, BOSS, Sony..... everything gets forfeited. The profits go towards companies like Huawei which all of the sudden bid and compete for 5G network technologies.

The major reason the TPP was negotiated was to counter Chinese economic power. It always amazed me that the current US administration doesn't understand that.

A number of years ago, the chinese gov't put out a statement that since they had 10% of the worlds population, they deserved 10% of the worlds resources. They were specifically talking about the arctic ocean.

Now I am pretty sure they aren't going after the russians or the americans, that leaves Canada or Denmark. The next 10 or 20 years could get interesting.
