We decided to cancel our home phone service since the kids both have cell phones now and we have great coverage in our area. Called Telus to cancel my service. I was paying $70 per month. Their 1st offer was to reduce it to $40, nope please cancel. Then they offered $25, nope please cancel. Then they offered $10 a month with long distance, voice mail and call display included.... I said o.k.

I sure wish I called last year!

Canceled mine about 6 years ago. Haven’t missed it all. Solved the regular supper time telemarketing calls at the same time.

I got them down to $13/month as well and kept it. It's good for certain times and my kids are still smaller, but old enough to be home alone.
From their point of view, they've got the 50-60 year old infrastructure in the ground run to homes, they may as well make $10-20 an month off it rather than $0.00, so they kind of have to drop there price these days. Just wish they'd fix it up so that I could get true high speed internet with it rather than these cursed Smart hubs, satellite and what not forms of internet that are unreliable, then they sell to many in the area then the service drops even more!!:mad3:

Don't have a landline either, haven't for years. The only real impact beyond saving money and not having to deal with telemarketers is that the MIL doesn't come to stay with us as much as she doesn't have a cell phone and has no means to call out if something were to happen when me and the wife are out or at work.

Don't see me complaining one bit!

Ive been paying $12/month for 3 years for my land line, but only after calling and complaining (threatening to leave). It just shows how those ****s will bleed you for all they can get if you don't get on their case.

Good post. My wife called Shaw 3 years ago about our land line. We have been paying a net of 12 bucks a month for free LD, call dis[play and voice mail for the past three years.

Ive had $10 per month landline for 3 years with Shaw. For that price + free long distance to any other Shaw customer in Canada i'll keep it. Hate talking on a cell phone. Usually manage to hang up on the other party with my ear.

Haven't had a solicitation in years. Get plenty on my cell tho.

Good on u BD FOR PUTTING THIS UP. Sort of figured everyone knew u could get a deep discount on your phone line but it appears lots of people are benefiting from this post . Infon sharing is one of the truly great things about AO specufically and the internet in general. As long as a guy is careful not to believe 100 % of what they read it is a great equaliser.

I watched everyone in the house not answer the landline. The line i had sucked though as a local store that had it that called for shopping cart repairs debit machine repairs and unpaid bills.

You may be able to port your landline with OOMA for $4 month, which includes unlimited national long distance. If you cannot port your current land line to OOMA they can provide you with a local number.

OOMA is a voip service. You need internet, an OOMA black box (I bought mine at Costco for $100) and any number of handsets.

Curious, did you check to make sure you have 911 access and that if you call 911 they can locate you using your VOIP connection?

My wife did the same thing. We have Telus Cellular, Optics etc. Our land lines have been free for over 2 years. Pays to ask. A friend of mine worked for Telus for 30 years as was p....ed off as he was paying 15 a month.

Cell phone link or VOIP link on your computer will both run your security system and the bad guys can't bypass it by cutting your phone wire outside.

We haven’t had a landline for almost 8 years. Security system runs off cellular service. Don’t miss it at all. Telemarketing calls stopped too. Our kid is at the age where she can stay at home by herself, but we are not quite ready to get her a cell phone yet, so not sure how we are going to manage that.

We gave up our land line when we moved into our new place last year. All of us have cells but it does feel strange not having a land line.

Thanks BD just got my bill reduced from $54.00 to $22.00. Great post, just saved $384.00 a year and got some free international long distance thrown in. Worth the wait being on hold for 10 minutes.
