I've been on the hunt....ran into a few 10-11" perch a couple weeks ago.....ive hauled up about 2000 sub 6" perch but they dont count lol.

The smallest jigging spoons you can find and Swedish pimple. Tip with maggot, worm or minnow head / chunk. Once you get one, perch eyes are usually great to use.
Finding them is the hardest part on the vast majority of AB lakes. And they are often dialed in on other food sources that they will snub your offering.

I’ve noticed that the limits are still 15 on most lakes, are the perch populations really able to sustain this? I don’t usually target them unless I’m running tip ups for pike where I love to just wait in the shed handlining small 6-10 inches with tungsten jigs.

Perch quickly stunt.

Perch lakes often winter kill, resulting in loss of the use of the resource if it is not harvested.
Sask has limits much more generous.

"liberal limits" used to be 30 Perch. Some lakes now have a limit of 5 in Alberta.

Just because the limit is lowered does not mean you will get bigger perch in an Alberta Lake. As for the winter kill, it is consistent in Alberta, so on those lakes, what difference will it make if the limits are even More Liberal?

We will be on the hunt again this weekend. Been trying to find a perch bite for a few winters now but it has been a chore. A little more desperation to find now as my dad says he would like to go ice fishing one last time before he dies. Nothing like putting the pressure on. Best of luck to all!

Seems to be good perch fishing is being found in deeper then normal water....like 40-50'...that being the case, every perch that comes out of the hole is a keeper no matter what the size cause it isnt going back down with its innards being blown out of there mouth from the swim bladder expanding way beyond what it was intended for...had that last weekend, and fortunately the vast majority were nice perch with only 4 being what I typically would release....but they were still tasty!

I found them today, but the buggers wouldn’t bite enough to let me set the hook. Took a couple for a quick zip up but they got off. Oh well at least they were biting my lure today. I had small spoons, one perch color with a small flash, and the other a Swedish pimple. Tipped with colored maggots, I then put on a small minnow tail which only got one inspection before they went away.

He took a serious smell, but not actual bite that I could see. Camera was behind him tho. He was one of the biggest in the school, and had some wound or something on his side, top rear quarter. Of course I hooked up the darn DVR backwards again and no recordings.

These perch are real small, yet the biggest would probably make it to the frying pan. I put down a wire worm / tiny jig head with a maggot which I figured would be small enough for a semi-swallow. But they didn’t come around again.

They were in about 8 ft right on the edge of a weedline. Any tips on getting reluctant perch to commit? I’ve been reading up, and on a mission to just get one. I briefly considered snagging one, just to get it over with, lol, no not really.

I think my wire worm jig head would have been the best offering since I’m assuming their keyed on to the shrimp. There’s tons of them, and I didn’t see anything else, beside a rare solo minnow, and I have doubts even the biggest of these perch seriously target minnows.

I feel most perch around here are to shy and not aggressive enough to take on the small spoon and Swedish pimple. Unless I'm catching 12 or 13 inchers I have to use the micro jigs with the smallest hooks
