I know we don't like to talk about things like a chew out but I had something special this week . In the month of December I had 3 chews one day and a single on the next check, I was devastated and figured out what I was doing wrong . I attribute it to loop size too large and support collars that were loose in support wire . Since them the problem has ended.
On Monday I caught a coyote wearing a snare that had previuosly been chewed off ..I was happy to say the least but today I caught 3 nice dogs and was informed tonite by my skinner that 2 of them had freshly healed scars from snares. They were caught in the same bait site where the chews occurred and must have been traveling together then and still are . It is encouraging to know that they do survive the mishap and proves that coyotes are one tough critter ..pictured are the repeat catches ,the single had the snare on and 2 of these 3 had scars ..for all I know the fourth one could be the eagle wrecked one from 2 checks ago. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190126/5a4499c70d1f91c9a60a483fb1c21085.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190126/75ae57d4c0651b49948eba66752351be.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190126/ebcc49f57a2af55ceedc2115bc0461bc.jpg

Too funny Shakey.

Well at least H380 can take his time skinning them because they won't get green bellies. :sHa_shakeshout: (said for fun in trapper satire)

Seriously, H380. Too bad on losing two yappers to the baldheaded buzzards. The eagles follow the predators just like the magpies so when a predator gets caught the eagles lick their chops. An eagle at a baitsite is conditioned already. Check your snares first thing in the morning if possible. Early bird gets the coyote.

Good advice red bullets for all that don't know that . Distance makes it impossible for me to check every day so I go every other . A 3 day check is a true recipe for disaster . As for folks that feed coyote carcasses to the birds I think its just gonna train em to eat caught coyotes as well and I'm sure they prefer a nice fresh warm one to a cold one .As a rule if I keep lots of bait and it is fresh the birds mind their business ... but not always . Ive lost 3 coyotes this year to the birds , mostly goldens around here . I try and set a safe distance from baits so to lessen the temptation but find the biggest deterant to predation is the position a dog dies in . If he is tied up to a bush in a sitting position or looks like he is asleep in the bush as a rule they tend to be left alone more than those that are in a vulnerable belly up stance , it is all just a matter of chance how they pose at death . Good luck to everyone the rest of the way .
