So excuse my ignorance but how do these lakes bounce back?
Do a few fish survive and slowly repopulate the lake?
Do the authorities stock them? Or what happens?

Thanks

Rarely is it total winterkill. It winterkills to different degrees.

Usually older fish die and younger survive.

Fisheries almost never stock perch. Lakes either bounce back on their own or stay bad.

The only recent yellow perch stocking that I could verify was at Ft. Lions Community Pond in Ft. Saskatchewan in June of 2018.

That pond is a little small, wouldnt we have a ton of stunted perch?

Some of our great Perch Lakes should have had weirs put in to stabilize the water levels, and should have been re stocked.

Two that come to mind are Frenchman Lake and Missawawi Lake.

Missawawi started losing water after a road was built on the north east side, which cut off some of the drainage to the lake. Then a number of years of drought dropped the water level to the point that the bay south of the campground became a cow pasture. Used to be 8 foot of water in the bay in the deep part.

To my knowledge the water level never came back and it is a total winter kill since the 1990's.

This lake took a ton of pressure and continued to deliver big big perch.

Now on the winter kill lakes, why not allow liberal limits?
