Hi fellow Anglers,

I’m just wondering what your traditions are for the first fish you catch.

What about for fish you could keep? Do you keep or release?

Thanks!

This is Alberta, the first fish I can keep has generally come from BC or Saskatchewan, This year is a bit different since we ate a few Florida fish.

I release most of my fish, so I'm catch and release mostly by default. I might keep a fish for a meal while I'm out camping where I can, but I don't have any traditions about my first catch of the year. As deschambault said, Alberta isn't the place to fish if you're looking to top up your freezer.

Released bass and sturgeon so far in BC. Hopefully release some large pike next week when the southern Alberta lakes open.

I figure might as well release them all. Its only a matter of time before the government shuts down all retention at the rate they are going, might as well get used to it now.

I've release all that I have caught this spring. Plan to keep one or two over the summer for a nice shore lunch.

1st fish of the Alberta season gets a "Get out of the fryin pan free" card as do the rest for the year, except those Class B I'm hoping for. Three of them will get a "Do not pass go, go directly to the fryin pan" for that rare treat (here) the rest of Canada calls shore lunch.

You started this thread, but never offered your "tradition" for the first fish caught.
Let's hear it.:waiting4:

I rip the hook out of it's mouth, or dorsal fin if it's foul hooked, and then throw it back into the water, leaving it to wonder what kind of god would allow such a thing...

My tradition, where retention is legal is to release the first fish into a cast iron frying pan with butter and lemon pepper. The rest if I catch more get released back to the creek/lake.
