I have a new Helix 5 SI and I am wondering about what exactly I am looking at?

Why are the fish between 12-17 feet of water? Why aren't walleye on the bottom? We caught several walleye in that area, no pike.

Are they pike at that depth? Are they feeding on baitfish? Am I just clueless?

I admit, I am just learning how to use this unit, don't assume anything or assume I know.

lol definitely turn off the fish ID, it will show any object as a fish. Try adjusting your sonar frequency. Try using the 200khz (narrow beam) with sensitivity adjusted as high you can without distortion on the screen and see if you are still marking those marks. Im not sure what colour palette your using but that could be just bait you are marking. Darker the colour, denser the object.

I usually use 83Khz (wide beam) when exploring new areas but I find it much harder to mark fish accurately. Dual beam is usually hit or miss. Side imaging has to be used at a high rate of speed for more best results. I often find myself adjusting the settings when i change bodies of water. Hope this helps.

Fish will usually stay in water which is most comfortable for them, that is to say dissolved oxygen content and/or water temperature. They may venture out of those zones temporarily to avoid predation or to secure food but will likely return.

Looks like you have it on split screen, can you show both sides for us?

edit: showing 2d/chirp other side is DI looks like.

As said, turn off fish ID and learn to interpret the signals.

Used to be some great tutorials on finders by Humminbird. Search for them, they are worth reading/watching.

Doug Vahrenberg (sp) has good ones.

Also check on humminbird site too.

It wasn’t on split screen. I was trying to make the pic smaller by cropping it OOOPs, I think you are right. But I only took a pic of one side

Thanks guys
