Thanks, this was one of those times when everything just seemed to work out. I didn’t have much time to hunt so just went for a quick walk in The morning. I had a bull answer me and he came right in, shot him at 7 yards. He ran about 40 yards and fell over. If that doesn’t get a person excited there is something wrong with them!

Here’s a small boar I whacked in Texas last February. Spot and stalk hunting pigs is a great excuse to go somewhere warm for a week in the winter. If you can find a sow in heat that’s being tending by a large boar it’s almost like hunting elk. The sow’s squealing and boar’s grunting allows you to locate them and keep the wind in your favour and there are even young “satellite” boars running around the breeding pair.

I’ve had an incredibly busy summer, and was completely unable to do ANY preseason scouting... didn’t even make it out for a hunt until this past Friday/Saturday.
My youngest son (Matty)turned 12 this year, and although he got a nice bear this spring, couldn’t wait to try for an archery deer. We sat in our whitetail stand Friday night, but didn’t have any bucks come within his comfortable range.

Saturday we had planned to sit the same stand, but the wind was wrong, so we decided to scout out for elk and mule deer, and hopefully get a stalk opportunity. Our first area was fogged in pretty thick, so we decided to head down to one of our favourite ranches along the red deer river. Matty spotted the bachelor group first. They were mixed in with some does, heading off an alfalfa field up into the hills along the valley edge. Fortunately, as they slowly fed their way up the slopes, the does split off, and it was just the bucks heading up into a finger coulee with low brush. There were 4 bucks initially... our target buck, the biggest (obviously) a solid, symmetrical170-175” 4x4, and two little dinky bucks. We got lucky and watched them bed down from the truck, high on a bank, with a little brushy bench about 40 yards in front of them. I was confident that if there were no other hidden deer in between us, i could make it to that bench and get a shot! Matty decided to stay in the truck with the spotting scope and radio and talk me in, and NOT have to make the long climb up the valley.
Unfortunately, as always seems to happen in those hills, they were LOADED with other deer. Does and small bucks scattered around everywhere, and i didn’t make it within 300 yards of the target bucks before does busted out from below me, ran up the hill TOWARDS me, passed by me 40 yards away, and straight to the bucks. The whole group spooked up and over the horizon.
Thinking they were gone for the day, i started making my way back to the truck, but i was barely down to the base of the when Matty called on the radio to tell me the bucks were back and heading into the very next drainage upstream from me!
In order to get the wind back in my favour, i had to hike one finger coulee upstream before starting my stalk, during my walk, i came across the biggest bull snake i have ever seen, sunning itself on the hillside. Matty wanted me to grab it and bring it home to mess with the girls, but instead i left it and continued.
Anyway, I relocated the deer, by which time they had bedded in the shade, with a good wind. They were on the left side (from me, facing downhill towards the river) of a shallow drainage with waist high brush in the deepest part, but with a perfect heavily used cattle trail going right through the brush. I was able to silently crab-walk down this cattle trail, using the brush as visual cover. Along the way, i removed my boots to quiet my footsteps.
I closed the distance to the group of deer bedded on the hill. There were 4 bucks, and a doe with fawn had joined the group as well. The 175” buck was bedded broadside at 40 yards, with the two little bucks behind him, and the big buck fattest at 55 yards. All i could see was his head. So i sat and waited... 4.5 hours i waited on that hillside. ALL the other deer got up and moved around multiple times in those hours, and i was tempted over and over again to shoot the 175” buck, but self control prevailed.
Finally he stood up. Facing almost directly away from me, offering no shot. I readied my bow, thinking that since he was calm, he would soon start feeding towards the other deer, or at least moving enough to give me a shot. But no - he turned quickly and bedded right back down facing me. Again all i could see was his face and antlers. DAMN!
This time though, the wait was only about 10 minutes before he stood and turned broadside, looking down the slope towards the river. I quickly drew my bow, rose onto my knees to rise above the brush, settled the pin behind his shoulder and squeezed the release. The arrow hit him far back, he kicked and tore off down the slope and out of sight. I wanted to give him time, due to the poor shot, but wanted to relocate him as quickly as i could, so i gathered my gear, put my boots back on and climbed back to the top, and began walking/glassing along the valley rim to find him again. It didn’t take long. He was in the very next drainage over, and hurt badly. Wobbling on his feet, he tried keeping up with the other deer, but they outpaced him, and he gave up on running and bedded down. He had only gone about 100-150 yards. I got Matty on the radio and told him the deer was down - but not dead. I wanted to see if i could sneak up and get another arrow into him, but wanted to give him 20 minutes or so to weaken, to ensure he didn’t get up and take off. I watched the buck as Matty made the walk up from the truck, and as we approached the deer, we could see that he was dead. We took some pictures, and the landowner friend of mine was good enough to allow us to borrow his side by side. We were able to drive right to the buck and load him up!
Unfortunately, he tore some of the velvet off when he dropped, but it will still make for a beautiful mount. We green scored him today at 194-6/8 gross.

Not a monster by any standard but will make some damn fine table fixin's this year! My first year back bowhunting and last night was my first night out. He came in to some locating bugles then committed when we gave hootchie mama a little squeeze. Shot him at 30 yards. Not a great picture as it was more of an afterthought, prior to skinning.

Well.... No story? It would be nice to hear if that beauty came in on a cow call, buggle.. spot and stalk etc....

It was actually a bit of both.

Great morning, heard bugles first thing as I rolled out of camp. Hiked in the dark to a spot I had a stand and a group of cows was crossing religiously every morning. This morning was different no cows and a bull calling his face off 1-2miles away. I knew where he was headed and I knew I could beat him there. So I hustled to the open meadow paralleling the screams and bugles from the bull. Got into position and made a few short cows calls, he came in on a string tried to circle down wind through the open. I was on my knees arrow nocked behind a bush and peeked up, Range 45 yards...he saw me draw but hasn’t figured it out yet, pin on the spot, release the arrow. Arrow buried to the fletch, he turns and runs but a few quick cow calls stops him quartering away. Range 87 yrds...nock, draw, release...hang time and thwack another solid hit. He turns and stops now facing away. Bolts 10 yards into the bush and crashes...the biggest bull I have ever shot is now down. I took a full 30 minutes even though I knew he was down and only 100 yards away. Just time to reflect and appreciate the life we as hunters choose to live.

No I switched to Tooth of the Arrow fixed heads, I am able to tune them extremely well and they group at extreme distances (100 yards). Part of the reason I was confident in taking and made an 87 yard follow up shot. I would NEVER take a first shot at that distance but if I already have an arrow in something and I have a chance to get another I’ll take it every time.

An excellent hunting trip. Didn't have much choice but to shoot the bear as it was stalking us. We Yelled and gave him every chance to leave us alone but 11 yards and not showing any sign of him backing down he made the decision easier.
My buddy called the elk into 38 yards at about 630pm. We gave him an hour and then tracked him well into the night. We bumped him at about 10pm so had no Choice but to give him the night and come back in the morning. We got on a very weak blood trail the next morning but persistence paid off he was dead about 200 yards from where we bumped him the night before. The shot ended up being slightly more quartered towards me then I realized. it still hit him fairly good. Right behind the shoulder blade and came out the guts slightly. Amazing how far he went with the amount of blood he had in his lungs.157597157598

I was fortunate to take this guy last week on the 13th. I was in a spot early and gave several cow and moose calls. With no replies I thought I would give an elk bugle to possibly get some video footage. (The Monday before I was lucky enough to harvest a dry cow Elk) Before the first elk bugle was done I heard this guy fire up. A second elk bugle had him come in on a string. 30 yard shot and a 70 yard retrieval. Then a whole lot of good work.
Had intentions of posting earlier but got pretty busy. Next is Mule Deer I hope.
Sorry about the blood in the pics but weather was warming pretty quick and focus was a couple quick pics then load and outa there. Had an 11 km ride out.

Few days old but I’m just figuring out how to post photos.

When I took my velvet whitetail, I was repeatedly accused of poaching :mad0100:

They're out there people, I took mine on Sept 17, many years ago. Not even close to book, but my favourite trophy animal by multitudes.

Yeah it is certainly possible. This one was taken on the 6th, don’t think he would have made it another day without stripping the velvet though.

Congrats very nice bull, we had the same thing this weekend only didn't get the moose, but cow and bull called and nothing so my buddy decided to bugle to see if any elk around and the moose answered back.

Is that a technique for moose hunting pre rut? Was the moose trying to run a would be bull elk out of his territory?
Thanks and what a great bull moose.

This is my first archery bear. Was out looking for a buck I've been chasing for the last 3 years. This sow showed up 1/2 hr before last light. Shot her at 13 yards, she ran about 20 yards along the side of the hill and then another 15 straight up the hill. Piled up about 20 seconds after I shot her. Quick ethical kill. Broke a rib on the way in, got both lungs with a pass thru. She had tons of fat on her. We rendered down 9 litres of fat.

That'll pucker up the ol arsehole.

I had a big black one run by me on Friday the 13th, while I was sitting in the bush 80 yards from a bachelor group of bull elk. They didnt seem to phased by it at all, but I was solo and was re-evaluating my choice to sit there alone.

Actually I was out to try and get a moose. I had just done my first sequence of calling and was sitting in my stand enjoying a nice sunny afternoon. I happened to glance hard left down a quad trail I walked in on and saw two bucks slowly poking their way along. The first one came into view at 20 yards and stopped to work a spruce branch overhanging a small scrape. He turned his head once to do that then looked around and turned to lick the branch again. That's when I let fly and it was a gimme shot. After half an hour I was standing over him. I like the early season bucks. They are relaxed and they are so good eating.
Now if the moose would just co-operate.....

Congrats Dend! I believe I chatted with you and your friend after you got him to the road, great bull.

Probably, I had the little Tacoma all filled up. It was nice to meet you, always like meeting AO guys.

Kind of a long story. Went out beginning of the season and probably spent 12 to 13 days total hiking around 3 different spots. Only saw 3 moose before this one. 3 Elk total and 2 white tail. But did find an amazing dead head in the bush of 248. Ill leave a pic. Spent lots of days in a tree stand and still hunting. Explored tons more land than ever before. Has probably 8 different bull moose on camera in september. Took 2 days off work to get it done. All day Thursday I didn't see anything so moved to another property I had been to once. Walked the perimeter and saw a cow moose. Finished my loop and went back to the truck to have a break and try not to quit for the morning. On the way back to the truck I saw this trail and decided to still hunt it. Went slow and called and nothing. Came to a fork in the trail and went left. Took a few steps and decided to go the direction of where I saw the cow, which was the right part of the fork. Probably 30 yards down the trail saw this big black moose bedded. Saw antlers and started to freak out. Went to get low to move forward and started to fall backwards. Lucky for me there was a down tree that my butt landed on and made no noise. 35 yards from the moose now and get up and move 5 yards forward for better shooting lane. Find a clear lane about 2 feet wide. As soon as I had my bow ready to go, I didn't have an arrow knocked, he stood up and walked right into my lane. I stopped him with a grunt and let the arrow fly. He only ran about 30 yards and fell right beside that log which was a huge help on a solo break down gutless method. I couldn't believe it. Measured out in the truck at just over 44 inch.

Here's the elk I found this year.

It's to early in southern alberta for the whitetail rut. Just be quite and head to toe camo spot and stalk. The damn crunchy snow makes for slow going.

tbrown

Beautiful buck. No story?Yeah I'm pretty proud of her, this is her second big game animal. She also took a really nice muley velvet muley last year, so she has a pretty good start to her hunting career.

We spotted this buck with another the day before and they ended bedding out in the canola, so we let them be (I'm not a fan of going into canola for multiple reasons, and it would have be too tall for a shot anyways). We carried on for the day but didn't really turn up much. We returned that evening to find this buck out in the field, so we made a game plan to come back in the morning to see if we could find either of the bucks again. We spoke to the land owner and we were granted permission to pursue them if we they were still in there in area.

The next morning we returned and didn't see either of them at first light, the field is pretty hilly so we decided to go for a walk around the outer edge of the field. As we walking down the hill we noticed this buck and a smaller one standing on the edge of a slough, looking right at us. We layed down in the fence line and waited them out unit they settled back down, 3 more does came out of the slough and had joined them. I stayed along the fence to keep an eye on the buck while my fiance crawled back to the truck to suit up and grab her bow.

The two bucks and a doe all bedded on a side hill 30 yards from the edge of the slough. Where they were bedded the crop was only up to the bucks belly, so if we got into position she should have a clear shot. We crawled down the fence line to the edge of the slough, then we crawled through the slough until we were positioned below them. The buck was bedded in a way that the crop was over his eyes but below his rack. She ranged his antlers at 31 yards. Then the waiting game started, he stood 3 different times but didn't present her a shot. After 4 hours she finally got her opportunity. The buck jumped the string a bit and was hit back a ways but he ran the the next slough and bedded down and expired shortly after. Best part was that slough was right next to the road, so we only had to going into to crop to grab her arrow.

It was all smiles the rest of the day! I'm pretty excited for her. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191016/cd9f44a2432ed25b41736d6bb7a0bc38.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191016/24104daed14aa6aa6a6a9d909832f541.jpg

Shot this spike bull on Oct 10th, I really wanted to shoot a nice bull this year but things have not gone as planned. Had this guy come in and decided to shoot him after looking at the poor guy. He had a fractured skull at his antler base that crushed his eye socket. Eye was dangling.

Next day out I had a beautiful 6x6 at about 15’. 7 bulls in one night. While I feel a little disappointed to not have the opportunity to take a nice bull ( have yet to shoot a branch antlered bull) i am appreciative of the elk meat to feed the family.

Hunted a new setup (treestand) I put up in the dark, on a property I have hunted for years. Made a guess where the deer might move because of the cattle on the property. Guessed right and had a herd of 10, or so, come by. This guy was at the back. 28 yard shot, 80 yard recovery. Not a huge deer, but one of the bigger ones I have seen in this spot. Was pretty exciting watching a tall, dark antlered, big bodied buck approach through the timber. Awesome experience.

My 12 year old got a spring bear with a rifle as his first big game animal, and we were hoping to follow rhat up with an archery mule deer. We had a target buck we hunted hard for the past two months, and we got super close over and over again - he missed on our first stalk at 23 yards in mid September, and never got another shot at him. We were at 34 yards this morning when a swirl of the wind sent him running.
We thought our day was done, but after hiking some coulees and a LOT of glassing, we found a couple of bucks in a narrow finger coulee about a mile away. Tired, after a long day of hiking and glassing, Matty didn’t give up: “we’ve only got a few hours of light and it’s our last day. We’re not gonna kill anything in the truck - let’s go for them!”
We hurried to the last place we saw them, and no bucks. There weren’t many places for them to go in the wide open prairie, so i told him we’d ease up the next drainage, so to nock an arrow and be ready. As we slowly created the ridge, the first buck was below us feeding - quartering hard away from us, his head in a bush. Rarely does that ever happen - and the buck was only 27 yards away! Marty’s arrow hit the buck a little far back, but with the quartering angle, it went up into his chest for a quick recovery. A GREAT consolation buck in the last few hours of the General season in our zone.

Better late than never. Came in silent and slow. Finally turned and gave me broadside at about 10-12 yards. 50 yard run and then fell straight over backwards!

Those two pictures sure make him look different in each one, first one he looks tiny, next one he looks great! Nice work!

Nice shooting guys!
Open field makes it a bit tough with a bow.
Any story to share?

S12Just put them there for the picture before we got to work. There was 5 in a group. Called them in, one got to us 300 yards a head of the others and we shot it. Cow called again and the others came in. Shot another. The third one circled and I managed to call it back in.

Was lucky enough to fill my whitetail tag. 40 yard shot as he came out tailing a doe.

First deer ever! After loosing a nice bull elk I made a bad shot on with a recurve, I sold it all to get a compound. 15 yard from the ground and saw him drop within 50 yards. Good end to my season!159570159571
