Took my daughter to PCR today; she's not too into the whole fishing thing, so I figured best take her to a place where the fish are plentiful. And plentiful they were! We fished from the dock using chunks of salted smelt with the expected result: 'eye after 'eye after 'eye....etc.
It was a gorgeous day, & it didn't take Becca long to get the hang of the fine art of soaking minnows.:D She didn't miss many, once she got the timing of the hook-set figured out. Here's a few pics of the day...

First walleye of the day;as you can see from the bend in the rod, we were using ultralite rods- if you're gonna catch small fish, at least use a rod they can double over!

http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/7320/p7100418.jpg (http://img30.imageshack.us/i/p7100418.jpg/)

Many more followed...

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/2153/p7100423.jpg (http://img23.imageshack.us/i/p7100423.jpg/)

Becca's arms got tired from landing so many fish; she decided to relax in the shade for a while...

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/1019/p7100420.jpg (http://img223.imageshack.us/i/p7100420.jpg/)

Then, right back to hammerin' walleye!
One of many double-headers...

http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/6460/p7100426.jpg (http://img107.imageshack.us/i/p7100426.jpg/)

Just before we left, she decided to show off a little, & caught 2 walleye at once!

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/9137/p7100424.jpg (http://img135.imageshack.us/i/p7100424.jpg/)

She was totally schooling most of the other kids (& adults) who were fishing from the dock; I was catching my fair share, too, when I wasn't releasing one of her fish or re-baiting her hook. We had lots of smelt, so we shared with anyone who wanted to try it. At one point, both of our rods were being used by a couple of kids who were hanging out at the dock before heading out tubing; one of 'em caught his first fish!
A big pike (15lbs?) tried to steal an 'eye off the hook of the fella fishing next to us; kinda cool. This guy is an old pro at PCR, & after watching my daughter land a whack of fish, he said, "You can see she's been taught well."
Made me proud; she really doesn't fish much, but when she does, she pays close attention & follows tips & instruction really well. Just wish that translated into her wanting to go fishing more often; but, it doesn't.:(
Oh, well; I'll just have to make the most of the few times I get her out there!
It was a great day on the water with my kid; life is good.:)
Peace out!
Steve

Sounds like a great time. We were out there this morning and started dragging them in one after another. We stopped counting at 50, lots of fun.

Nice job there dad. You should be proud of her. You may not know it. But your molding her into a fine outdoors gal. She may not say it now. But there will come a time later on when your trip now will pay huge dividends. Trust me I know what I'm talking about. My son is 22 now. I took him fishing lots when he was younger. Just the other day he said to me. Dad we haven't been out fishing in a while. When the hell are you taking me with you?

So don't worry about those times that she doesn't seem very into it or very interested in going. In the long run she'll be bugging you to take her out.

What did you catch them on, and how did you hook the smelt, (cut them in half and hooked the head or..)?

This thread was from 2009. So you felt the need to not only question what they were using and how. But to copy and paste their entire posting with all the pictures and put your one line question on there. I always wonder why people just quote the whole postings that others make. I can see if it had relevance. But this sure didn't. Don't get me wrong. I aplaude you for doing a search and finding a post on the area you wanted. But you could have just asked the question without reposting their whole original post.

As for an answer go down to PCR. Sit on the dock. Get your rod ready. Tie on a jig head. It won't matter if it's green, purple, red, yellow, or blue. Then put on anything onto your jig. Half a worm, a whole worm, half a smelt, a whole smelt, half a leech, a whole leech. Drop it over the side until it hits bottom. Now sit there and wait. If you don't have a bite in say 30 seconds then somethings wrong. You've probably got weeds on your jig. The best way to find out the information is to put in a bit of time on the water.

lol didn't realize it was from 2009 until you pointed it out kingfisher.

Funny how I just looked at 'friday' and '10th' which made me thought it was last Friday.

I sure hope they keep PCR a C&R only lake! Gonna be an awesome fishing location for many more years to come.

they could use some feeder fish in there.

i see a post from 2008 on sibbald has been un-earthed as well
by the maverick. it would be less confusing to just make a new post with
a question on it. if you were serious i am sure you would get some good info.
responses to 2 year old threads are not the way to go.
being fairly new myself i have rec,d a lot of info from fellow
boardmembers & shared some as well.

my 2 cents

I salted my smelts first; helps keep 'em more solid so they don't fall off the hook when I cast. You don't need a lot of bait to get a PCR walleye to bite; I cut each smelt into 4 small pieces. I prefer to use a pickeral rig for this type of fishing; the weight's on the bottom & the hook's up the line a little, out of the weeds.
Realistically, you don't even need bait there. I usually fly fish, and last week at PCR I caught tons of fish off the dock. I fished a little green jig 15ft under a float; they loved it!

Hey guys I was just pulling Maverick's chain. I even said I applaude him for doing a search.

Seriously though Maverick I wasn't kidding with what to use there. It really doesn't matter what you toss in there. They will bite it.

It's a good fishery. Just too bad as Banger suggested they really could use some feeder fish in there. So the walleye have something other than themselves to eat and grow. But I don't see that happening anytime soon. So we'll get the same sized fish for many more years to come. PCR is a great place to bring kids and for anyone needing a good fishing fix.

They have loads of smelt, minnows and power bait to eat.... I have been fishing PCR for the last three years and and the average size is increasing about 3/4"-1" a year. Only 10 year to go....

Yeah you can catch BIG pikes off the dock, but 99% of the hits are usually walleyes. I guess if you want pikes, just leave your hooked walleye in the water......something magical might happen.

This guy who sat beside me last week was screaming when he saw a big pike chasing after his walleye. :scared0015:

I don't see why not... although I've only caught walleyes in that lake with rapalas.

Now if you're on the dock using crankbaits could be tougher while others are using the real thing. You could try larger 5 of diamonds there too I imagine if you are looking for pikes.
