Dunno if we can get a sticky on this to keep it at the top of the page, but...

IT BEGINS!!!

I took a drive today, and some of the smaller lakes are starting to freeze over. Muir, Chickakoo, Sauer, and a few others are icing up. Even Devil’s Lake had a few feet of ice around the north shore. I would imagine a little farther north and west they are starting to freeze over as well.

It will be a while before the ice is thick enough to venture out on, and remember there is no such thing as safe ice (unless it’s in your drink). Stay safe and have fun this winter!

Gonna take the boat in for winterizing this weekend and then the hardwater prep begins! Have so many plans and goals for this year, including an entire week in southern Manitoba/NW Ontario at the end of March to really take advantage of March Madness out there. Maybe most importantly, tho, I want to find a true trophy walleye in Alberta this year...they're much rarer than in MB.

Nice what do you consider a true Alberta walleye trophy

Sent from my SM-G930W8 using TapatalkAnything under 25" I wouldn't even mention having caught, and for Walleye, "trophy" starts at 28" for me. (In MB, I'd say 30", 'cause there's just so many big greenbacks) I've never even seen one through the ice here (I know the rivers have them, but I'm told they're super rare in lakes in AB, especially south of Edmonton)...

So yeah, TLDR is: Want to get a 28"+ walter through the ice this winter...

Awesome! Wouldn’t mind a trip to MB again myself! Those Trophy Alberta Walleye are hard to find, but they’re around!

There was a website suggested a few times on here that you could see daily satellite images and watch the ice come or go. Can’t find it now.

I think your referring to Ice Detector. It is on the Angler's Atlas website though i don't see that option anymore. I found a youtube vid about it (it says Beta so maybe it is defuct now). Maybe there is a certain data the option is enabled?

an ice thread, crap, we left southern Alberta for Portugal a couple of weeks ago and the wind was howling and 15 above, here in the Algarve it is above 20 day and night but they keep bringing me fish with the eyeballs staring at me and all the bones in - rather have my nicely filleted pike from ice fishing - huh - all this talk about ice fishing is getting me homesick - but the beer is pretty good to wash down the sea bass

The main lake at Newell is still open, but there were actually people ice fishing at the mouth of Rainier Bay this morning... Late last week Greenwald Bay only had an inch at most of ice over it.

Everyone be safe!!!

Heavy snow early on in the season has little impact as the thin layer of ice cannot support any weight and thus the snow just sinks into the water. Once there is 6" or more of ice thickness heavy snow then becomes a problem. The big lakes up north didn't even have shoreline ice as of last weekend. Not too concerned just yet.

I echo your thoughts, everyone be safe!

Thanks Snap! Daphnia imitations definitely aren't my first choice, especially when fly fishing. I did pretty well actually. I fished from around 9am to 1pm. Pretty steady action with about a dozen hooked and 8 to hand. My first was that 14" rainbow, I had another that size to the hole but lost it. The rest were all first year rainbows and surprisingly no Tiger trout.

I hope to spend some time at Sylvan this winter, maybe I will see ya out there!

I can confirm North approach down RR 183 to the north launch is easy travel. Theres a left turn at the intersection that can take you down the East side but it's getting rutted up pretty gross...passable because its frozen but not wonderful. Haven't gone around the North lease rd in a while, it's too unpredictable most of the year past the launch.

Hey guys last weekend I hit lac la nonne - the coves have 4-5 inches of ice but the middle was open and fishing was slow - only one hammerhandle
This weekend I hit wizard which is about 6 inches and caught a bunch of hammerhandles and saw two tiny perch on the camera
Next I hit mink and star - mink has about 5 inches and star has about 4 complete skunk at both lakes

It’s started that’s for sure

I can’t attest to how thick the ice actually is but today there was a double pod ice shack in the middle of Chestermere Lake. I also seen what looks like a home owner has plowed the snow on the ice and made an ice rink.

Went out yesterday and hit Mons lake by Smoky Lake. 8-9" of solid black ice everywhere we drilled.... no fish in sight for over an hour. Went to North buck.....8" solid black ice everywhere we drilled going straight across one bay, again not a nibble. After 1.5 hrs went to nearby Lodge lake, only 6" of ice and got thinner 30 meters out from shore. Finally caught a few fish. Clearly its still early in the season but the ice thickness variation between two lakes literally next to each other re-instilled the need to use extreme caution. Cant make assumptions that if one lake is good, the next will be safe as well. Be safe out there and good luck.

Was that the report of the drowning?

I’m certain your good to stick around shore, but I wouldn’t go blindly walking out to spots. I’d suggest by the boat launch at Kinbrook and leave jr on shore till you’ve tested things yourself.

Calling had 7 - 8" of good black ice in front of the townsite on Saturday afternoon.

A STRANGE shaped ice heave is about 1000 yards off shore, in an oval shape. Did not get close enough to test but the ice slab was about 7 inches on the uplifted parts so PLEASE be careful if you try to cross. Test any crossing point first with an auger as it could be a separation that re froze and is actually thin ice.

Fishing is fine.

10" in Jackfish. Just a heads up to anyone who drives on...I don't care if your crazy enough to drive your SUV on on the ice when it's that thin just don't fly past huts doing 30mph. When the ice is that thin and your going that fast the ice cavitates and lake water shoots up the holes...not the end of the world but it still sucks!!

Newell was 6-8" of ice the last two days. Very variable. Lots of floodwater in spots, up to 6" of water on the ice in some areas. Fishing was a little on the slower side.

So i hit a small lake just west of Edmonton this afternoon with my son. Fishing in 21-22 feet of crystal clear water. Ice was horrible, 2" top water and 6"of slush and only 7"of good clear ice. Usually this is a hotspot for tons of small perch, great for kids to get hooked on fishing. Today....crickets, staying warm in the tent, doing some jigging and a couple anchovies near the bottom for pike. I'm out trying other holes when my son starts talking about a log on the bottom. I came back to the tent and he shows me this "log". Quick glance and I'm like ok..great its a log....but then I blacked out the tent, let my eyes adjust and took another look.....not a log!!!!! 3 feet away from my 6" anchovie is a monster pike....sitting right on the bottom...sat there chillin' for an hour. It was easily 7-7.5 times the length of the bait. I compared and visually measured a dozen times....this thing is 42-44" easy, and thick. After dropping everything next to it in my arsenal...it ever so slowly moved off into the abyss without so much a sniff of what we had to offer. We did end up catching some perch and 5-6 lb pike....but not the beast. But just watching it made our day.
That being said....super disappointed with the trash people leave behind on the ice. Not hard to pick up your beer cans and coffee cups after yourselves!!!!:angry3:

How did ya do? Is there a big ice heave on shore.

Managed one 18.5" walleye and some one pushed the snow onto the ice right in front of the boat launch. I was fishing in 18ft of water and every hole I drilled had lots of fresh water shrimp come out.

Fishing was on the slow side. Couple of perch. Enough for dinner.

I know of some rainbows being caught in Newell, but haven’t heard of any browns. The majority of the rainbows are caught in the summer near the head gates. The bow flows into the lake at the headgates, which explains the trout. There’s no reason there wouldn’t be a few browns too.

Was there two weeks ago. Hardly any ice at interlakes, unsafe to fish. Went over to the boat launch at upper. 5-6 inches there.

Lower K was about 5-6 inches around interlakes as well. Should be good to go now. I'll know more tomorrow as I have some friends going.

Last I read somewhere it was 8 inches all the way across. Check the road report. Highway to the lake was closed for avalanche as of yesterday I believe (until further notice).

So as to cold lake being frozen over is that considered early or late? Made a trip up last year in Feb hoping to be earlier this year with truck trailer sleep on the ice.

I don't think it's abnormal for the lake to freeze over at this time but the thickness will really vary between the main lake and French/Long bays. Last year in early January there was a good solid 12" of clear ice in French bay but the main lake was half that or less. East of a line drawn between birch point and garnet point is like it's own little lake as far as ice build goes imho.

I was at Wab today. I was fishing off the town site. The Ice varied from 10 inches to 12 inches the deeper you went out . A few guys had medium size vehicles on the ice . I walked on . The fishing was awesome . Nothing big but had a hoot. At times I couldn't keep up between my Jawjacker and my line in the tent. Tight lines :)

As had been posted, it's between 8-10" at Sunbreaker Cove on Sylvan. We tried the primetime bite...fishing 3-8 tonight (Sat) in a spot that has produced for us every single time we've been there... And nothing. Not a mark on the Lowrance, not a thing on the Aqua Vu, not a nibble... It was DEAD. Talking to others as we got there, seems everyone is having a tough go at Sunbreaker...

Was at Lac La Nonne yesterday. 7 to 8 inches of good clear ice. 4 to 5 inches of snow cover. Quadded on. Some people parked their vehicles on the ice near shore.
