To answer Redfrog, I'll suggest a simple criteria to be used to determine whether someone is a good enough marksman to try a "head shot". (I'm not condoning it and don't do it myself.)

Take your best spotting scope, your newest binoculars, range finder and/or digital camera and hang them on a piece of plywood in an arrangement that leaves an open space in the middle of them which is approximately the size of a deer brain. Now go back 75-100 yards and start shooting at the open space. If you are not confident enough to take the shot, you shouldn't be shooting at a deer's head either.

My point is, I don't think enough people realize that there is a terrible CONSEQUENCE when you miss.
