Thunder Lake recovery

There was talk in the feed and seed in Barrhead that “test fish” have been stocked in Thunder lake now that the water level has returned to an acceptable depth for the last couple years. There’s a weir system in place at this particular lake that could help regulate water levels and given a few more years without serious drought I think this might become a halfway viable lake again! I’m cautiously hopeful that this rumour might be accurate but can’t find any info on “test stocking”. Anyone heard of this before?

I wouldn’t be at all opposed to seeing some perch of mysterious origin appear in Thunder lake!

4 years ago a CO told me that Thunder was stocked with perch. I’ve been out in the boat with the in-laws a few times since and haven’t seen any sign of perch.

It does get super green and gross in the summer, but so do Goose lake and Devil’s lake and they both support lots of fish! It would make sense for this lake to be a high priority for re-stocking as it’s already got good facilities and is so close to Barrhead.

Campground was pretty decent. Too bad water quality is so poor.

Why not put some effort in re establishing the water levels on a REAL PERCH LAKE: Missawawi by LLB!!!
That was a truly great Perch lake, but for the loss of water level and the resulting winter kill.

A Weir on Missawawi, and fixing the culverts on the west side that are not draining into the lake would really help that lake a lot.

Then you could know what Perch fishing is all about.

But yes, Thunder did have perch in the day.

I’ve heard Missawawi used to be the cats’s pajamas for perch and I’d love to get a chance to see it recovered! I’ve decided this year I’m writing to my MLA 3 times this coming year, perhaps I’ll send a quick letter to Ms Goodridge as well about the recovery of Missawawi.

You sure about that? Missawawi took a ton of pressure in the 80's, with limits of 30. It was a true hog factory.

Quite a few lakes already have weir systems that don’t seem to see any use, Thunder lake being one. Who is in charge of maintaining/operation of these weirs? County? F&W?

The key to any so called perch factory is fresh water shrimp or gamarus. If they are there in numbers, the fish grow big fast.

Cross, Francis, Banana- that whole chain too! I’ve also noticed that Jack that eat a pile of shrimp tend to have a pinkish flesh.

You can add Chip Lake to that list. First time I ice fished it last year and was surprised by the number shrimp bubbling out after drilling a hole. I was thinking perch would do well there. Of course the pike and burbot probably wouldn't complain either :)

Maybe it’s my eyes but I find them to be a bit on the orange side when consuming lots of shrimp.
