Hey fellas. Have any of you ever tried Elk or Moose Heart for Walleye Bait? Another forum member told me they work great when cut in strips to emulate leeches.

Any of you guys ever try this? I'd love to hear how it worked if you did.

Don’t know about walleye but tainted moose heart and liver was a go to bait for burbot fishing in BC

I've used beef heart in exactly that application. Works well. Almost as good as real leeches but easier to keep in fridge/freezer between trips. The benefit is they stay on the hook nicely.

I'd probably stuff and bake the moose or elk heart for supper. Carrots, onions, garlic, mushrooms and seasoning, some red wine and in the oven she goes.

Works great. Caught a 9lb. walleye on a strip of moose heart this fall.

like EZM i've used beef heart and it works like a charm to i guess imitate a leech or just used like a jig with a minnow, just a bit different as a jig and beef heart, best part is it stays on for a long time, durable after many bites etc

Beef heart has long been a staple for catfish and lake sturgeon fishers. Anything that feeds off bottom and wants the nastiest, smelliest hunk of meat. Wouldn't surprise me if you could run a strip of it off a bottom bouncer and do well...

Never tried it. Seems to be a waste of great meat. I'd much rather eat the heart myself. Only animal parts I have used are liver (chicken) for catfish.

I’ve found that fresh works much better. Used to hear about guys using stinky bait for burbots, fresh minnow on a glow jig out fished stink baits by a large margin for me. Back to OP, heart works great at certain times, I like to cut in strips that imitate a worm or leach. On a jig or behind a blade worked well also.

I have used it but prefer Beaver meat, or chicken gizzard.

It does work, I just prefer to keep it for my own consumption.
