Made a still fishing rig with a mousetrap trigger, used a cut down garage sale rod and a fly reel and it worked super slick! Caught a pile of jack yesterday North of Barrhead but didn’t manage any perch on the mousetrap monstrosity. 8” black ice under 3” white

Nice job . Nice Pike. Nothing more rewarding than making something from scratch and it works. Congrats !!!!!

Sawed the end off the end of the trap and looped a zip tie between arm of the trap and the guides on the top of the rod.

That's awesome!
I really want to see a pike pop out of the hole and grab the cheese!!!

When I make the next one, I’ll cut the trap a bit shorter and increase the distance between rod holder and trap. I think that should make it a bit more sensitive and it might trip for perch/light bites more effectively. However, I was happy that it didn’t trip from the moderate wind even once- definitely a balance to find.

That mouse trap trigger is ingenious I love it! Is the line looped through the trigger or does the rod coming down set it off?

There’s a little triangle on the pressure plate I was looping the line through for a while, but it broke off after the first few keeper sized fish. After this I filed notches around the edge of the pressure plate to catch the draped line when I got a bite. This seemed to work just as well and didn’t have the line entangled in or frozen to the trap when you went to reel it in. I would definitely do it this way if you weren’t running a heavier fire line as well.

Neat idea however i think you may have more luck with the pike eating the cheese if you drop the mouse trap down the hole. Any regulation issues with that i wonder ? Haha:test:
