Dec 11th …. Got out really early, we were the first group on ice, excited & hopeful, got set up & fished for over 1 hour, it was still dark & nothing! Finally, just after 8:00 got a small Walleye then seen a couple of Whites that showed little interest, then had a few come in and hit my W/W but no hook-ups, after that we caught a few more small Walleye but still no Whites. Finally Skantty caught our first White around 11:00ish, we only seen a few more moving around after lunch. We started seeing people leaving in the early afternoon, most likely disappointed, we packed it in at 3:00 with only the 1 White in the pail between 4 of us. It was a bit tough dragging your stuff on the lake, there’s at least 4-5” of powder snow, we could see a group of guys further out catching a few Whites in the morning, they were standing or sitting in chairs & looked cold covered in snow, a few of them were wearing a PFD’s, playing it safe. Couldn’t believe there were at least 3 vehicles that drove out from the Norglenwold lake access road, they were out quite a distance from shore most likely on 10” or less ice, crazy! Not a great start to the Whitefish hard water season, but tomorrow’s another day, going back out.

The only White was caught on a Brass W/W with a red bead, this is the Brass W/W with a Glow Bead that I had a few Whites interested in, including a few Walleye.

Hope your opening day was better than ours.

EDIT: ... the best part of the day was the A/O company, we at least had a good time visiting & catching up since last year.

X2. Hot bite from 9 till 11 took longer to drive to the lake than it did for 2 guys to catch a limit of whites. Kinda thin lookin fish but they brine faster that way. Good luck fellas. 7 to 9 inches of ice. Good hard ice.

Good to read you guys limited out on Whites, you must of been at the right spot, our honey-hole at the Lighthouse area didn't produce.

Dec 12th ..... Fishin buddies all had work & do other stuff, went back out solo to the Lighthouse area, was the first one on the ice just before 8:00 am and set up close to shore in 4 FOW. Moved 3 times, ended up 100 yds or more out on a gravel sand bar that produced lots of Whites last year.

Watched a number of people come out with all there gear/tents and then pack up & start leaving at 11:00ish by 2:30 there was me and 2 tents remaining, I packed it up at 3:00 had enough.

Another brutal day, seen 7 fish all day & caught 4 of them, 2 Walleye, 1 Pike & 1 White. That was better than most out today, everyone I spoke to didn't catch one & most didn't even see a fish. I keep a fishin diary, last year in these same spots I was fortunate to catch 29 whites over 7 days before my season ended on Dec. 20th, got a long ways to go to achieve that goal, but that's fishin, there are a lot of factors involved for a successful day.

Walleye & Pike went for the 4 gr small Sebile Vibrato (Cdn Tire sell them), yesterday had a few Whites hit the chartreuse yellow W/W that's tied 10" above my Vibro, but no hook-ups. I swapped out the 2 treble's with smaller hooks, that the Whites can inhale, vibro calls them in for a look & the aggressive one's will hit it when it's lying down on the bottom & you twitch it. As well, I downsized my W/W today, was using a Daiichi Style 1530 #10 Wet/Nymph hook in Brass with gold glass bead, tipped with a Pink Mag.

One improvement today that I really noticed was I had my 10" Jiffy and fishin 2-10" holes vs 2-8" holes the other day, I could see fish coming into my field of view earlier and was prepared for them. Fishin in shallow water you only have a split second to see them when their gill plates flare open ready to inhale your W/W, you have to be ready to set the hook. Having larger holes does make a difference when sight fishing.

Last night we got another 3-4" of snow, it's snowing out now, that will make it more difficult hauling out your gear & don't forget to bring a shovel. Were off to Sunbreaker tomorrow with Scott & Scott, have a few spots to try, hopefully the forecast of some sun tomorrow. Good luck this weekend!

A few pic's ..... cheers

EDIT: In my first post I typed "Skantty" which s/b "Skawtty" .... sorry Scott, got it right, now.

Tks, as mentioned in the past, I don't have any issues with sharing info or helping others. For me it's all about gettin out & having fun and I've been lucky to fish with people I met through A/O, catching a few fish is a bonus. Happyfisher was our 4th A/O partner the other day, we may or may not see him joining us this weekend.

If other forum members are planning to be at Sunbreaker tomorrow or possibly Sunday, perhaps we'll have a chance to meet/visit.

I know this is probably a silly question but: Is there any way at all to catch whites on a tip-up? Anything that would make them swallow a tiny treble hook and move off?

I get one hell of a tension headache staring down a hole, to the point that I’ve basically give up any ice fishing that requires it. As a result there has been a conspicuous lack of candied whitefish in my house. Gonna have to try the old smack the little kastmaster into the bottom routine soon I guess

3blade, never a silly Q here, unfortunately, I can't share any personal experience because I don't use tip-ups or Jawjackers, etc. Scott, uses them but it's set up with a large minnow or smelt for monster Pike, but all he caught Wednesday was a bunch of Walleyes, he's never got a White when I've fished with him. I recall others here may have had some limited success using a Jawjacker, perhaps the new one's that automatically jig your presentation would work, don't know.

I'm sure someone here will be able to share something ... stay tuned.

Dec 13th …. Drove by the Lighthouse Park this afternoon only 1 guy in red tent, he was gone by 3:00 pm. Decided to see what was happening in Norglenwold, drove down Sylvan Lane, the lake access road, it’s beat down like Hwy #2, drove on to the ice & took these pic’s. The Town Fire Chief, drove up & we had a chat, he confirmed the guys with the Holiday trailers are parked over 14-15 FOW on perhaps 10” ice, if you don’t feel like dragging your stuff out, this area may be an option this weekend. The smart guys are those who parked by shore, hope everyone parks far enough apart on the weekend so we don’t have a Lake Winnipeg, Balsam Bay repeat here.

A few pic’s taken after 3:00 pm today … is that you out there?

JawJacker would be the way. It is common practice now. And, if you want to give it some action, you can also by the jigging base. But the JJ alone is just fine. You can have that setup and still have a 2nd hole nearby to do sight fishing. Take a break when you need it and the JJ keeps working for you :)

Dec 14 … finally it didn’t snow & the sun came out! Scott & I went out to Sunbreaker, loaded up the sled & walked out, there was 2 vehicles parked on the ice close to shore you could see the flood water in the tire tracks, I wouldn’t recommend it. We struggled pulling our gear out in at least 8-9” powder snow, it was a tough walk. Scott from Sundre & his Father-IL joined us, between the 4 of us, we must of drilled 50+ holes, ice was about 10”, we continuously moved from 4-5 FOW to 12-13 FOW, working a couple of drops we fished during the summer, we seen all of our Whites in the deeper water, they were cruising anywhere from 3-4 feet under the ice to 6-8 feet off the bottom, very few would hit our presentations & no hookups. Fortunately, a few Walleye were hanging around otherwise it was another one of those days.

There were quite a few groups/tents out everyone was in shallow, people started to leave just after lunch & for those remaining most everyone was moving out to deeper water in the afternoon. Noticed with all the snow, the water level was right at the top of the ice starting to cause some flood water everywhere we fished. Ice conditions will be a mess with the flood water, all the snow and warm temps later this week. If you were out at Sunbreaker today, hope you did well.

No Pic’s my camera battery died.

I also have caught whites on a jawjacker.
Some tips that may help.
Do not let your line freeze or even partially freeze in, they are usually lite biters. Any resistance and the hook is usually dropped. I often use mine inside a heated tent or use it in later March.
Use the lightest trip tension setting possible and also use the lowest rod angle. They have soft mouths, you don't want to rip any bites out. And I always use maggots with the jawjacker. It seems to seal the deal on a stationary hook.
As for hooks, most of my production comes from wireworms but have gotten a few on very small spoons like the very smallest Williams wobbler, gold or silver are favorite colors. Whatever you use keep them SHARP!
Hope some of this helps you out.

Good luck

Zip, thought this was the day for your group. Next time, get em!

I was over at Gull. I thought heading over to Sylvan when I had to turn back from bush whacking to try and get to a spot...
Went to Brownlows eventually. Didn't wet a line thought until 10:30. 10 inches of ice. Lots of vehicles out. 50/50 walked or drove. I walked since they plough right to the permanent shacks. Great day! Multi-species and almost caught a big, big pike. Perfect weather. Everyone was very socialable. Just an overall grand day to be out.

May whites soon crowd your hook :)

Dec 15th …. Went out with Scott to the Norglenwold area, lots of people out, we finally found some active Whites in the shallows. Scott caught 2 Walleye, between us we got 5 Whites, should of had another 5, they were aggressive for about 1.5 hour and then starting coming in & turning at the last moment, then around 11:00 they just turned right off, we didn’t see anymore & departed at 1:00 pm just too many people. Scott caught the biggest, a nice fatty, on a Brass W/W with 2 Orange Beads, did an autopsy on the two largest, you’ll be surprised with the contents in their gut. We caught them on every color W/W’s in the pic’s below but Red they hit Red but no hook-ups, bright brass was the hot color, it resembled the fresh water shrimp, the dark colors represented the black scuds, we never used green, maybe it was my Green Glow Bead that attracted them, was surprised to see that many Caddis Larva Grubs & Houses in them. If you make your own W/W, these are the critters you should consider duplicating.

It’s been a tough week, today I even got a little excited when I got two Whites in the pail five minutes apart. Forecast tomorrow is a sunny day, may have to try this again.

A few pics ….

Dec 16th .... went out solo to the same area we had some success yesterday. It was cold this morning -21 plus wind -26, my feet got a bit cold until the sun came out and then turned out to be a nice day. Seen 9 Whites all day, they were back to they're old neutral behavior, come it for a look, bumped the W/W or turn away & swim along side it, only caught 2 small Whites that inhale my Brass with gold glass bead & Brown Cat 5 with green glow bead. Also caught 2 Walleye, seen a 4-5 LB Pike staring at my Candy Cane W/W, pulled it up didn't want to slime/stink up my shed. Not many people perhaps it was due to the cold temps. Taking tomorrow off, forecast is warm but very windy, not great for fishin a front is moving in.

This is coming from my fly fishing background but matching the hatch is a good term. A size 12 weighted olive scud and orange size 10 scud might produce more strikes in this case. As looking at what they are after is shrimp. Just somthing I would try.

Didn't get a chance to go out opening week/weekend, was on call and work was stupid busy. I like to fish Norglenwold as well, hoping to get out this weekend. We have a few jaw jackers with jigging bases, will give them a try with some w/w's I picked up from Wireworm King fly shop out of Red Deer. Also excited to get a chance to try out the new Milwaukee fuel with clam plate and strikemaster lazer lite flite that my wifey let me purchase this past week.

Dec 18 … Bty warm day, stable weather = active fish. Very few people out, seen lots Whites all morning got set up about 7:45 am got my first White at 8:05 on an Yellow/Orange Candy Cane & should of limited out by 1:00 pm, but lost a nice one in the hole, got the last one just after 2:00. Moved 3 times kept going further out & deeper (12-13 FOW), that’s where they were hiding. The other day I had a few go after my orange/brown W/W, I made a new one last night and added an orange glass bead, it was the hot W/W pattern today, got 3 Walleye & 3 Whites on it, nice!

Fishin Tip: Today, I went back to only tying 1 W/W per rod & downsized the hook to a Daiichi #1530 size 10, the finesse technique worked, I believe the Whites were confused the other day by going after the bottom or the top then turning and swiping the other one or missing both. Also, I slowed down the twitching, when I seen a White approaching my W/W I stopped and held the W/W steady and they came in & they didn't inhale it but sucked at it and I was luck to get a few good hook sets. After I made these adjustments, I started to hook up with more Whites & Walleye, too. Give it a try if they come in and turn hard like they were frightened by your W/W, stop twitching & hold steady!

About 2:00 pm I heard some honking & there was a lone Canada flying from West to East towards Red Deer, was surprised to 1 goose still hanging around. Some guys were out yesterday & left a bunch of pallets on the ice, they didn’t show up today, hope they come back & clean up their junk.

A few pic’s … enjoy.

Dec 19th … up & out early, Whites have been the most active in the shallows about 8:00 am & they didn’t disappoint today. It's still dark out but I got my first on the Yellow/Orange candy cane with a glow bead at 8:05 the second at 8:20 on a Brass W/W with gold bead, it was big, came straight up into the hole & into my bucket, then seen 1-2 more but they were cautious just looking or bumping but not taking it, there were fewer fish moving around than yesterday, still seeing one every 15-20 minutes, finally got my 3rd at 10:30 on the Brass pattern. Yesterday’s hot Orange twist didn’t attract one today. Didn’t see one Walleye but had a small Pike staring at the Orange twist after lunch. Had my camera down about 8 feet behind me, it didn’t bother the Whites & gave me the opportunity to pan my entire area, didn’t help, they disappeared. Move 3 times back into my holes from yesterday over deeper water, didn’t see any, frustrating. Two groups must have been just as frustrated and left at noon, I didn’t see another White until 2:40 pm & it wasn’t interested & kept on going out to the open lake. This morning was foggy with ice crystals then bright & sunny, perhaps the bright day had something to do with it & they all went into deeper water, too much snow to go hunting for them, I quit at 3:00 pm.

Never fished for Whites until we got our condo in Sylvan in 2005. Today got my P/B White, it measured out at just under 20”, used a string to measure the girth at 11 3/8”, it’s nice to see Sylvan can produce quantity but also quality and they’re getting bigger, too. Was surprised to see how healthy she was totally spawned out & lots of stored up fat & full of caddis larva grubs.

I mentioned this a couple of times, I have a fish allergy, can't eat any type of fish, Pike slime is the killer, all the fish I’ve caught over the past 7 days have been cleaned/filleted & given to friends, everyone enjoys a fresh fish dinner. Gave Scott 5 Whites for his smoker. The fillets from this one fish will make a nice meal for the Mrs, with a glass or two of chardonnay.

Tomorrow’s my last day fishin, hopefully it’s a productive one, my season is coming to an end, California dreaming!

A few pic’s …

Cheers

Up extra early, on the ice at 7:30 set up in my hot spot in the shallows & ready for them just before 8:00 am, had my camera down about 6 feet behind me, couldn't believe it, didn’t see one until 9:10, it came & went, seen another at 9:30 wasn’t interested then nothing for 45 minutes, decided to move to where I got a few over deeper water. Seen one at 10:30 came in after the Brass W/W, got him, hoping there would be more but didn’t see another one until 11:45 it was in the distance on the camera going out to deeper water. Had lunch, didn’t see anymore & packed it in for the season at 1:00 pm. That was it 4 Whites all morning & didn’t see any Walleye or Pike. Perhaps the pending change of weather has something to do with it, forecast is for periods of snow tonight & tomorrow.

Got home & unpacked & burned the fuel out of my auger, took the plug out & put some oil down the cylinder, it’s put away until next season. Put the sled away, drying my tent out & cleaned up some of my gear.

Wish it would of been more productive, however, that’s fishin, had some good days & a few not so good days, my P/B White was an accomplishment & I have a new goal for next year. Trust you enjoyed the daily adventure as much as I did & hope some of the info, pic’s & fishin tips shared in my report will help & improve your success over the remainder of hard water season.

Were departing for Palm Springs in a week, gone for 3.5 months, need to work on my golf swing & game again. Wish all my A/O friends a very Merry-XMass & Happy N-Year.

Cheers

David

Perhaps someone here smarter than me will identify it.

I see you found it in the pic of my Dec 19th P/B White belly contents. My guess it's a small cyst or perhaps a parasite, I didn't notice it when I was cleaning the fish. Haven't really seen anything like that on other Sylvan Whites, will make a note of this for next year & see if any of the fish I catch have them/it.

Tks for pointing it out, hoping others here will have the answer.

Reposed a full size pic ... so we can all see it again. It's looks shiny ? I'm not going to drag it out of the garbage, for a closer look.

Off to the Sylvan Legion for an event.

Small liver fluke? I dunno but if you catch a wormy white you'll know it. Seen them in Marie lake with pencil sized holes in the meat full of green yuck. Turned me off whites for awhile. Have a great trip zip and thanks once again for all your excellent photos. Gave me something to look forward to during a long tough old grind at work in the bush. Merry xmas.✌

I find whitefish camera shy but in shallow water all I do is use my camera but don’t drop it below the ice. Have it in down view and then fish upright with the screen placed wherever is comfortable for you. Works great, just need to be mindful and pull the camera before the fish gets to the hole.

Hope things improved for you, when we were out at Sunbreaker we headed West of the boat launch we did see some Whites with tail up on the camera when we were drilling test holes then after we got set up in 5-6 FOW we didn't see any Whites only a beige colored Burb. Once we moved down the drop to 12 - 13 FOW we started seeing Whites & Walleye. We found it hard to move around, the snow was powder & deep it was tough dragging all our gear/shacks around. If I had the chance I would go back and with downsized W/W's I believe you could do well moving shallow then deeper & back shallow in the late afternoon to evening out at Sunbreaker.

When we fished at the Lighthouse & Sunbreaker it was 10", this guy drove a bit to close to the Marina Bay entrance where residents say is a natural spring, so he was over maybe 4" ice. Going for a walk later this afternoon while the bird is baking to see if the truck is still there. I wouldn't be driving around on the lake.

Went for a walk out to Marina Bay, trucks still there, they removed the fuel tank & anything of value from the box. He drove within 75-80 paces from shore across the entrance to Marina Bay. There was mainly quads & snowmobiles tracks in that area, you can see his tracks & where they ended in 5-6 FOW. Someone drilled a hole about 15 ft from where it went down, there was approx. 5” of poor ice. Since I’ve lived in Sylvan, this isn’t the first vehicle that went down in this location, Emergency Services had to rescue a bunch of kids in another truck and male & female in one of those Side-X-Sides, people should know better.

A few better pic’s.

First solo trip of the year. Beautiful day that was full of humbling fishin'.

Landed several walleye (standard issue Sylvan style). Whites were pretty neutral where I fished today. They were all up high, just below the ice and not interested.

Might have been due to a later start for me. I hit the lake around 11am and fished until 4pm.

Drilled a bunch of holes and moved from 4 fow out to 12 fow but similar results.

The Strikemaster Lite Flite/ Makita LXT combo was like a hot knife through Buttah! Couldn't be happier with this setup.

This guy was fun on a wire worm and 4lb test!

Cheers,

Scott.

First time out this season, and first time to RR23 so it took me a bit to find the spot I wanted. Right on the edge of the drop off.

Saw about 6 whites on the camera in the distance, one came in for a closer look and split.

Caught 1 small hammer handle on a 8” smelt right after I set the jaw jacker up. I didn’t even get back to the tent and it went off.

DK .... RR23 has lots of good structure, from the lake access road everyone turns left & heads east, I had a couple spots that were close to those weed beds that were mini sunken islands or humps that came up about 12-16" higher than the surrounding area in 6-7 FOW, Whites roamed around these humps then went deeper in the afternoon 18-20 FOW towards that sand bar that heads out to the middle of the lake. If you can find some similar structure with some sand patches between the low weed growth you should do well, wish you all the success.

People seem to be having some luck at Norglenwold for the whites, I have found that if you go out the Norglenwold lake access point, and turn right toward the lighthouse a ways, there's some whites wandering around there.
Palm Bay(Beach?) on the very North end of the lake is often a solid producer for whites as well, and is easily accessed by truck.
I fished RR23, off the point to the North in about 10 feet of water last week; no bites, but I did see 4 or 5 whites cruising by on the ledge in about 8 fow.

Side note, the ice is plenty thick on Sylvan, if you're concerned about going through, stick to the main throughways that people have beaten down. Theres dingleberries in one tons doing 80mile an hour out there right now and not going through.

Once I get out of jail, I'll need to garage engineer a safety disk/stopper so my 10" Strikemaster doesn't come loose from the drill & drop down the hole. So far planning on using a plastic kitchen cutting board, unless someone here has a better option.

Was outhere today winch tractor is sitting there truck still there deeper though just can see the roof alittle, caught a few fish was good overall
Is everyone walking at Sunbreaker right now because of this break-through? Or just staying away from that one area? I was thinking about heading out there for one last rip this weekend, but curious how much gear I should bring, if I'm gonna be hand-bombing it in the sled...

Tks for the suggestions.

SamSteele .... considered using a Frisbee until I read a post on Ice Shanty were a guy in the USA said his auger came off his drill and his Frisbee cracked & broke, most likely because it was to thin & he watched his auger go down the hole.

DiabeticKripple .... gave that option some thought, a plastic pail lid isn't much thicker than a Frisbee, I'd be concerned it wouldn't hold the auger from going down.

I found this example on Y-Tube, this fella mfg'd his disc/stopper using a 3D Printer, unfortunately, I don't have access to a printer, but really like his design. Still leaning towards using a 3/8" kitchen cutting board or perhaps a piece of 1/2" Lexan & cutting it in a circle, maybe even cut slots similar to this example. Would be easy to hang onto and lift up & out of the hole.

Picked up a 5" auger when in Palm Springs for $38.00 delivered, plan to use it mainly for dropping my Marcum camera down the hole to find structure then locate the spot on the spot ... modified it today to use with my M18 drill. It would also work well for perch and trout. Need to mfg a disc/stopper for this unit, too.

The extra sting. Makes sense Zip. W

ell, you have your health. And can look forwards to keeping one of those walleye that you often catch in the open water. Maybe pick up a white or two while at it. Variety is the spice of life :)

This was on a Sylvan Facebook fishing site .... happened yesterday, no one got any pic's, they said they got the vehicle off the ice last night.

Would of been something to see, people in their shacks said it felt like an earth quake & the water came splashing out of the holes.

Sitin is jail is getting boring, especially on the last day for fishin Sylvan!

Is anyone still fishing Sylvan? Is it still productive. I'm thinking about going for a half day on Saturday for whites
