View Full Version : The start of an ice-fisher...

I found out that my nephew has been begging his folks to ask me if I can take him for his first ice fishing trip. Between the weather and his hockey schedule it was tough to get a day that worked. The stars finally aligned and we were able to make it happen this morning.

His first fish through the ice was this nice female tiger trout. I think his tooth-free grin says it all!

Before he fell asleep on the way home he was asking when we could go again. I think he’s hooked!

Winters spent playing hockey and going ice fishing. The Canadian way. I love it!

Thanks for the story, the winter before my youngest daughter went into kindergarden, my work schedule was very slack so I took her out of daycare and did Mr mom duties. I've heard lots of guys gripe about how hard it is to get anything done in such situations, but I now look back on that winter as one of the most enjoyable periods of my life. Besides playing lots of soccer and hockey with her, we got to do lots of ice fishing together. Thanks for bringing back those memories.

Not wanting to hijack your post but these are a couple of my favorite memories from that time.

Nice fish and great smiles from all the anglers.

Every boy has a favorite uncle. I think your nephew has decided.

Nice to see Bushleague's daughter hooking up too.

You and Bushleague should link up. Kids could be fishing buddies.

They sure are, although I often think they should have been called leopards instead of tigers.

Well done young lad...I have been trying to ice my first tiger at what I assume is the same lake all winter and still have only landed rainbows. The kid has that checkmark on his bucket list done at 5 yrs old. Perhaps he can share some tips :wave

Here’s his technique:

1/4 oz Mack’s Lure Rock Dancer in chartreuse with the back half of a small minnow threaded on the hook. Hang in 8 feet of water under a JawJacker. Drink hot chocolate, play on your iPad, throw some snowballs and wait. Have your uncle hand you the rod when it trips and reel it in.

Not an ice fishing picture, but one we are all quite proud of... a thick 43 inch northern they caught. The youngest hooked it, but landing it took both of their efforts. I imagine that will be a personal best for some time.

Although the picture gives the impression that the fish was kept, we only had it out of the water just long enough for the picture, hopefully she's still out there and a few lbs heavyer.

great pics! teaching newbies to fish is well worth the smiles and keeps it entertaining for us old fishers.
