Ice is out on my spots so turning my thoughts to getting ready for open water..have bought a 14 ft aluminum boat with a motor and am interested in getting a basic fish/ depth finder...nothing fancy what do I look for or shy away from..thanx .

Striker 5 or helix 5 in that $500 range....cant go wrong with either. I have a striker 5 that I got the ice bundle for as well. Both units have GPS lake mapping and flasher mode with chirp/down imaging.

Helix 5 PT with the GPS. Especially if you also ice fish. Add the ice transducer and you can use it all year, including the maps you make with Autochart.

under 300 bucks....good little unit but depends what your requirements are...this fit mine just fine....from the ice to the canoe to the little tin boat just grab and go.

Keep an eye on Bass Pro in the next couple weeks.

Lowrance just unveiled the new Hook Reveal, so the Hook2 units are going to go on sale for some crazy good prices.

They often have some model specific sales too. You might be able to get into a 7" Elite TI unit for a little bit more than your $500 budget, and that would be well worth it in my opinion.
