Researched a bit before me an the family went an a member on here suggests spear fishing. He said he never even casted his rods he brought. Well I brought fishing rods an I never even put the reels on. The member lent me his spear gun an after a few hours the first morning, my boy an me were off to the fishing store to buy another gun. I have never spent so much time snorkeling/fishing. We ate fish everyday sometimes twice. So many different species an they were everywhere. We also booked a eight hour charter that was great. We hooked a marlin eairly in the morning that got off soon after then no action till about 2:00. Then all of a sudden a rod started to peel line. Not long after 400 pluse yards away this massive fish was comming out of the water! I couldent believe it had peeled that much line so fast. It stayed on top of the water for a good five minutes seeing the whole fish about six different times than it went deep. An about 45 min latter it finally gave in an started comming to the boat. The captain said he likes releasing the big marlin cause they arnt great to eat other than smoked. They took a measurement an pictures an said it was 450-500 pounds. The captain said I can’t believe you let your 15 year old boy real it in “I wouldn’t have it any other way”. My sons arms were so sore after they were shaking an he is a big strong kid. A trip to remember!

We spent a week on the hilo side an a week on the Kona side. Both good Kona had allot more or easier places to get in the water an dissent have to worry about the rip tide or waves crashing you into the rocks.

Nice. My brother lived hilo side for about 10 years south of Pahoa. Used to launch at Pohiki. That was one sketchy launch. Launch got wiped in in recent lava flow. But created a sweet black sand beach. My brother is there on vacation right now.
