I am looking to laminate my fishing license to credit card size. Is the barcode on the bottom really needed? I'd like to trim that off in order to make it fit properly Is this something that is scanned electronically by Wild Life officers? I'm having a heck of time getting it all to fit in a laminating pouch without proportioning the whole thing.

From my experience, cutting off a bar code usually invalids a license and might risk a different and lighter fine. Mine when checked has never been scanned just looked at. So you are probably okay if a CO is just looking to confirm proof.

Personally I wouldn't do it if it was me. But, this is your risk to take so you decide.

Why not just get a small plastic envelope, like from a wallet or bill fold? Fold the license to fit and done. Also, if you bought on line and printed at home you are probably ok, but if you bought at a store and it is on thermal paper, laminating will probably black out the printing. :)

You could try reducing the size on a photocopier. Just a couple percent should do it.
I buy mine online and print several copies to stash in all my fishing, camping gear. Copies also go into the vehicles, and RV just in case. Same as my bird game licences. Like you I cut and fold them into wallet size. They're just that tiny bit too big to tuck in neatly. It would be nice to have them sized for wallet applications.

Yes, I don't know why they aren't sized conveniently in the first place? I guess that would make too much sense. I did manage to resize it in photoshop and retain the barcode. I just wonder if they actually use the barcode? Has anyone actually had theirs scanned?

We were stopped by a CO near Edson in February and he scanned the barcode on our licences. My licences was purchased on-line and i printed it a little smaller than the normal licence, and he had no issues scanning it.

Or you could install the Alberta RELM app and have all Licences, WIN card in a digital form acceptable as proof of possession on your phone.

The barcode id an important part of the F&W procedure. If checked their device just scans the barcode and your information is accessed. They can find you without but not convenient like a quick scan. Dont forget to sign as that is still mandatory or use the RELM app as mentioned as another legal option. I have both and usually print a bunch of copies and sign them and have them all over. That way if my phone dies or drowns I still have my license.

I usually make a couple copies, throw them in ziplock bags, and take pictures with my phone!

LOL

Actually post #7, post#8 and post #12

The REAL question is....Why does AEP issue you a nice PLASTIC WIN card that most folks only use once every 5 years....but the licence you need to keep in your wallet for the entire fishing season is printed on toilet paper?

The technology is there to issue a plastic licence on the spot...it is not expensive.

BTW...yes, I have asked AEP...never got a good answer...

I trim it right down, fold it in 3, and then laminate it - to the same size as a credit card. If I was ever checked, they can tell I've purchased a license by what they can see - but if they really want me to, I could cut off the lamination and unfold it to reveal the bar code. I do the same with my BC Non-resident (trimming of a lot stuff I'll never need) and National Park licenses - and keep all 3 in my wallet.

I fish more in BC lakes and in the National Parks than in Alberta, and haven't been checked for my license anywhere, for many years.

Last season when I was checked, they scanned my paper license.

This year, everything is on the Alberta Relm app on my phone. That is what I will produce if asked this year.

I don’t wanna rely just on legal documents stuff stored on my phone. I have the APP with them on it but also have paper copies on me as well. What happens when you drop your phone and break it or drop your phone in the water or lose your phone. Anyone have the issue with your phone battery going from 80% down to dead in a matter of a few minutes out in the cold weather. Not something I want to rely on. When a CO stops you and asks you to show your licence he wants to see it now, paper form is the only way I can guarantee this 100% of the time.

I think that it is time to go digital... If your Phone goes dead F&W will have theirs in the truck and once you tell them your name they will find you and all your info no problem they will probably know what car you driving and where you were in the last 24 hours.
Those highlighted rules are from Dinosaurus Age ... time to get on with the program.

not disagreeing with you about the digital part but in a lot of places i fish there is no cell coverage for the OP to check if you are telling the truth or not, so that is why having a paper copy handy can save a lot of hassle of him issuing you a ticket for not producing a license and then you having to go thru the hoops of proving you had one to void the ticket. some OP's are good about it some are not.

Talked to our regular fish C.O. on the phone on this topic last weekend for clarification due to a disagreement on our Facebook group and went on for quite a while as well as a second call later as he got several calls to confirm what I had posted. He may even be lurking here so I will try to keep it exact as our conversation went

You can use the RELM app and is perfectly legal for a digital version and the only allowed digital version. That means no pictures of your license on your phone as an example as many do. Those are not legal and do not have to be accepted.

Paper copy and signed is the most preferred method. The big thing here besides the original is having the barcode to scan. They also want an original as there is always a concern some photo shop specialists may doctor the license then just use that.
The other concern with the phone app is that if your phone dies from no power, you forget to put it in your pocket, or 2 popular ones he said like dumping your phone in the water or leave your phone in the bottom of a back pack on the ice and the cold runs your phone right down and it cannot be accessed.

Best thing is just download the app and carry a couple of paper copies in key places so you have one available no matter what and never have to worry about a bad day because you got a ticket for nothing.
