Morinville reservoir was ice free this evening. Some of the other ponds and small lakes should break open pretty quick.

Rain overnight did help.

If anyone knows of any of the other lakes in the area that are ice free, feel free to post!

Ice came off Don Sparrow Lake in Beaumont today. Could see dead 2" perch so doubt the browns and rainbows made it through the winter.

Wabamun this morning. A bit of a late start but it is really breaking up fast. It will be gone soon!!

Hi Peter

I was thinking this one might kill this year. And while thats not generally a good thing I can bear this pond getting a "reset" this time around. It was doubtful those perch were going away any other way. If it was a total wipe out then we might have to wait a couple years for good fishing again...but it will be worth it.

Stay safe sir!

Joe

You bet. It went fast this year. As of last night the west end of Wabamun was ice free. There is still some ice on the east end of the lake, it is usually a day or 2 behind.

Yeah! Great to see. This constant above 15 degree weather and wind has made short work of the ice this year. Game on!

Me thinks Saturday on Wab will be the annual "First Run!" Just to make sure all is well before the fishing begins😁

When does the boat launch in the Village of Wabamun usually get set up? Can't wait to get out there

Just did some research...the Wabamun PP launch is currently not listed in the "Currently Available" category on the Provincial Parks web site, indicating it is not yet ready. Also the Town launch has a notice on their website saying they will make a decision soon as to when it will be open...so those two options, according to the most current web info, are not yet open...could change anytime though...

I drove by the Wabamun launch last night and it was "open" as in there would have been nothing stopping me from launching a boat. I don't know when it officially opens or if you are actually supposed to use it but like you say the website says they will make a decision shortly.

The Wabamun bay is clear but there is still a lot of ice on the south and east half (or third maybe) of the lake. I just took a little drive to check it out, his picture is from about 10 minutes ago RR 50 on the south side (about the middle of the lake).

I don't have my own personal thermal imaging satellite like thorn but I did take another drive down the lake this morning and it looks like the ice is all gone off wabamun. I have never seen the ice stay on the east end of the lake this long after the west end was clear.

This site is pretty good. Yesterday was a clear day so a good one to look around. All but the bigger lakes are ice free. If you need your bearings, I usually zoom out so I can see Vancouver Island and then head right to find Lesser Slave. LS stands out really well when ice covered like it is now.

This link should be showing Wab if it works right.

This is the link to the Sentinel-hub satellite network...takes a bit to play with the filters and different satellites...but its a cool tool to check things out...the calander shows which days satellites took pics.

It's amazing how quickly it goes.

We were on cold lake a few years ago - ice bound the entire middle of the lake Friday, ice was east shore to west shore with only a few hundred feet clear on each side.

By Sunday am - open water entire lake.

Does it melt or sink? On my dugout it sinks when the water warms up.
