Was on devils lake by onoway by 6 this morning and what a nerve rattling day - first time in the float tube fishing for anything other than trout. My nerves are pretty much shot but what a great morning :) First time there.

Once I got past the weeds, first few casts I had my first pike on a five of diamonds. nothing huge but they are healthy, nothing really slinky about them. Few more casts and I hooked into something heavy, thinking it's a log... ummm, no - the log starts moving and it's heavy on the fight. I'm starting to panic now, i'm in the float tube with no footing. Let it fight for a few minutes then real it in - pretty much dead weight so i'm thinking pike...

Ummm, no. this walleye pops up between my fins and i've only got about 6 feet of line between it and the tip of my rod... that was the last time i'll make that mistake. Took one look at my ugly mug and straight to the bottom she goes, rod buckles over and this fish almost took me for a swim.

Finally got it onto the tube and grab the camera cause i'm so excited - batteries are dead so I measured it against my arm. Now i'm no gorilla but i'm the better part of 6 feet. This thing was the full length of my arm with fingers extended - and fat as a pig. i've never seen a walleye that big and it's my personal best.

So yeah, there are definitely walleye in devil's, caught 2 this morning along with 17 pike. Definitely going back for more practice :D

And yes, all fish were released unharmed.

Sounds like a great day, Robert!
On behalf of all of us who enjoy fish porn, I'd like to say, "Thanks for nothing!!!"
Bet you'll make sure you have fresh batteries from now on!!!

I was a little miffed when I realized the batteries were dead but damn it was so nice getting that fish to the tube. First hog. Considering I had to run back to get home to get my swim fins, i'm lucky I didn't leave my head in bed this morning.

On another note, the waters are way too warm now for the neoprene waders. Is it safe to go into most of the lakes with bare legs or should I get a wetsuit or something? i'm seeing signs around some lakes about swimmers itch, never had it, don't want it.

Will definitely be back at devils soon and better equipped - Lost one part of my good shimano reel on the last trip to the NSR and the only other one I had didn't even have a drag. I wasn't far from the boat launch there and just at the edge of the weeds.

I don't know what i'd do with a 20 pound pike from the tube tho but now i want to try it - thank god for PSD's.

Cool story! Looking forward to pics next time :)

I've been meaning to give that lake a try and we have friends who just bought property out near Onoway so I really need to haul the boat out there soon.
