On May 17th Fish & Wildlife conducted a test fishery on the west half of Pigeon Lake.

- 6 nets were used, 4", 4.5", & 5" mesh
- 3 nets were strung together to make 2 long nets consisting of all sizes of mesh
- they were put in aprox 20 + feet of water
- left in the water for 4 hours
- when pulled there were 401 whitefish, 31 walleye, and, a couple jacks
- the white fish averaged out at 2.5 lbs each
- all the walleye were smaller ones. Nothing over 3-4 lbs

pretty intresting and sad about the pike at the same time.

I imagine one test must be seen as just that and that more than one test would be a better average. That said, the whitefish certainly do not seem to be "eaten up" by walleye. Can't wait to try for some more open water whites.

This isnt the only test that has been done this year, and wont be the last.

from the netting results done it seems as though happy perch fisher was right about there being no whitefish left in pigeon..... NOT (from borat :D )

May 17,,,, nets set at 20 feet,,,, I am surprised they caught any walleye and pike at those depths that early in the year. Quite simply pike and walleye are typically much shallower than that in the spring. It'll take several test nettings at various depths and locations to get a "good read" on reletive species composition and fish numbers. This first test net certainly does show the whitefish are still there though.
