View Full Version : Canoe electric motor?

I have a pelican 15.5 canoe. Regular style canoe, not freighter. I am looking to put an electric motor on it. Does anyone have any experience with a similar set up? Is it better to bow or stern mount? I am assuming a bracket of some sort will need to be built to make either work. I have seen a few variations online, but am looking for a few more opinions. Thanks!

I've always ran a stern drive on a bracket like Wayne has pictured. If you going to go out solo you need to put some 5 gallon pails full of water (obviously with lids stuck back on them) up front. Personally, I never really ran the motor on mine unless I had someone else in the canoe.

I made long battery cables and put a deep cycle up front to balance it out. my canoe (Ramx) is very wide bottomed though dont think Id want a heavy battery in a narrow bottom in the first place Im klutzy enough as it is :bad_boys_20:

I've had a few different brackets, this is my current one, if caution is excercised I can run a 3.5 hp kicker off this bracket. If you get your dimensions just right, it cant possibly fall off, even with a fair bit of torque.

Yup battery up front....motor on the back....even had a buddy put on solar panel s to keep battery good to go....he would get a full wk-end putting around chasing eyes.....easily.

I just clamp mine right to the side of the canoe since the motor can spin a 360 degree turn it doesn't matter the angle. Just mount on one side and away you go. Works great. I just use my batteries from my marcum. Lasts quite a while with two of them, nice and small and light. I have a 30 pound thrust.

Check out this video at 2:12 when I stand up you can clearly see how I have it mounted to the side. When I am alone it steers better if I sit at the back of the kayak. If I have to kids I put it at the front and go in reverse. I find when I'm alone it is harder to steer if I sit at the front like you usually do when kayaking alone.

Video Clip at 2:12 shows how mine is set up.

This. On my 17' Grumman I clamp the motor right onto the side near my back seat. Works great when beaver trapping. That canoe is aluminum however maybe the OP canoe is not?
But even on fiberglass couldn't one put pads on each side and still clamp over the gunnel?

Mine is fiber glass and it is fine. If you wanted to protect the canoe you could put a small piece of wood on each side or rivet some wood or aluminum to it. But mine is an old canoe. Owner left at the house when I bought it. Already has a patch job so I'm not too worried about it getting scratched haha.
