22 short dispatch round

Some of the old time trappers I have learned from over the last few year's have talked about 22 shorts being better for dispatching animals in traps over a 22 LR. Anyone got any experience with this? Looking for some insight. And yes my single shot 22 badger will shoot and function with 22 shorts.

I use 22 shorts to dispatch coyotes in traps all the time. Perfect for that application. Quiet and very efficient.

I like the 22 short, more than adequate to dispatch any animal at close range without ripping big hole in skull. If the little lady from Slave Lake could kill the largest grizzly bear ever shot in Alberta with 22 longs the shorts are more than capable to kill any animal in our traps.

I think both work equally well for animals in a trap. My preference is the 22 long because my rifle is in my truck permanent as I trap 12 months of the year. The rifle is not only used to dispatch trapped animals but to shoot beavers 30 yards out in the pond. My rifle has a clip and it doesn’t work with the shorts.

Trappermike, I agree with the clip problem with shorts and beaver needing little more hitting power. However we are suppose to nail a beaver with only one shot.

If you have trouble getting shorts to feed try the CCI Quiets. They are 700 fps so perform like a short but also come in LR so will feed great. They are quieter than most shorts, actually quieter than most air rifles.

Exactly my thoughts. I have a brick of the quiets for this reason.

Im a big CCI CB Long fan. Quiet, lo power but plenty to do the job, often very little blood, especially temple shots. CCI CB Shorts dont have enough power. Regular or Hi Power shorts seem like they have the zip of a long rifle round, loud and fast and lotsa blood

I agree with you grey wolf, but I have never met a hunter or trapper who can honestly say that every animal they have ever shot only took one shot.

I like the idea of the quites just for the fact that they will feed through a mag in an 22 lr rifle. I think in will give those a try next!

If your using the quiets in a semi auto do not expect it to cycle the action. I bought some cci 22lr running at something around710fps to make my suppressed pistol even quieter. Is very very quiet but will not fully cycle the action. There is enough recoil to reset the sear but that’s about it..

I would run them out of a bolt gun or a break action 22. Dont use my semi auto 22 for much more then grouse hunting.

Good advice Dean. I was going to suggest one of the Quiet or Sub-sonic LR rounds.

I've dispatched live caught skunks with these rounds.

If i was regularly shoiting swimming beavers, I'd look at the CCI Velocitor . If that's not enough, 22WMR.

I'd used to be assigned to accompany the contractor who did beaver control work in Calgary. Seemed to me the standard 22LR wasn't enough. Of course he had numerous rifle problems (get the dam thing fixed or get a different gun). He also didn't impress me with his shooting. I know it is hard shooting a swimming beaver in the dark or with a flashlight. If we didn't have to follow up on the wounded, we could have killed more.

17 hmr thru the shoulder of a coyote ..pinhole in and very rarely any bloodloss, muscle refills the hole.

When I trapped I used shorts more then longs or LR.

But I didn't use them a lot for dispatching trapped animals. I seldom found an animal alive in a trap.

I did use them on Coyote which I only trapped in late fall but not on anything else.
We don't have a lot of coyote up here. Not even close to the numbers I see down south.

What I used them for most was hunting squirrel and grouse.

I preferred LR or Hyper velocity LR rounds for Beaver hunting. But not trapping since I used drowning sets exclusively when targeting beaver. Mostly snares.
